The potential spinoff centered on Kit Harington's Jon Snow was announced to be in the works back in 2022.
Kit Harington will not be returning to the North anytime soon. Two years after it was reported that the 37-year-old actor could reprise his fan-favorite Game of Thrones role in a spinoff set after the events of the original series, Harington revealed that the potential series is "off the table."
In an interview with Screen Rant published on Tuesday, Harington confirmed that the highly-anticipated Jon Snow spinoff series is no longer in development. He pointed out that he never explicitly spoke about the spinoff because he didn't want to get hopes up while the project was still in the earliest stages of development.
And sure enough, when ET asked Harington for an update on the spinoff's progression last April, the actor said his "lips are sealed." He added, "I can't say if it even exists."
"In development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it's worth it and currently, it's not," Harginton told Screen Rant, in part. "Currently, it's off the table, because we all couldn't find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough. So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being."
But the father of two hasn't entirely given up on the idea of bringing Jon Snow back to the silver screen. "There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It's firmly on the shelf," he added.
While HBO has explored multiple prequel spin-off series to varying degrees of success -- with House of the Dragon premiering its second season in June and the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight -- the Jon Snow series would have served as the first Game of Thrones spinoff set after the events of the controversial series finale.
While Harington won't be returning to Westeros, he will be reuniting with his onscreen cousin for a new project. In February, it was announced that Harington and Sophie Turner will team up on an upcoming gothic horror movie, The Dreadful.
Deadline first reported the news, noting that the film, from writer-director Natasha Kermani (V/H/S/85), is set during the War of the Roses. Anne (Turner) and her mother-in-law live a solitary, harsh life on the outskirts of society. But when a man (Harington) from their past returns, he will set off a sequence of events that become a turning point for Anne.
Turner also shared the news on Instagram, writing of the reunion, "I mean we couldn’t NOT hang out again ya know 🤷♀️ #thedreadful."
Turner and Harington both earned Emmy nominations for their Game of Thrones roles as Sansa Stark and Jon Snow, respectively. Harington's former King of the North wound up being exiled from Westeros in the series finale and returned with the Wildings to the lands beyond The Wall.
Turner's Sansa on the other hand, ended the series crowned Queen of the North, sitting proudly on her throne in Winterfell, a crown of direwolves atop her head.
As Turner told ET shortly after the show ended in 2019, "I love the way that Sansa's journey ended. I think it was kind of the one thing that she wanted throughout the whole show…to be home and to be where she felt most safe and comfortable and that's Winterfell. She's totally capable of leading those people."
"Since she got to King's Landing in season one, she never wanted that Iron Throne. She never wanted to rule over that many people," she added. "I think, watching how this character finished on Game of Thrones was the most satisfying ending."
