The director has been separated from his wife since Spring 2022.
Stephen Gyllenhaal -- father to actors Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal -- has filed for divorce from his wife Kathleen, after 12 years of marriage.
The pair -- who share a 9-year-old son, Luke -- first separated in the spring of 2022.
In a joint statement released to ET on Tuesday, the couple says, "Yes it’s true. This is an amicable divorce."
"Stephen and I have consciously uncoupled and are now co-parenting our beloved son while being the best of friends," the statement continued. "We consider ourselves a family still, with togetherness and love."
According to court documents, which ET obtained, the 74-year-old TV director is asking for joint custody of their son, and listed their date of separation as March 26, 2022. Additionally, the divorce filing lists "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the dissolution of their union.
People was first to report news of the split.
Stephen and Kathleen, 49, tied the knot on May 7, 2011. The director was previously married to Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal for 32 years, from 1977 until their eventual divorce in 2009. Together, the pair welcomed Maggie and Jake in 1977 and 1980, respectively.
In April 2022, Stephen came out to support his son on the red carpet at the premiere of Jake's action blockbuster Ambulance, and the celebrated actor spoke with ET about how it felt to see his dad showing him love on his big night.
"I think if we've all learned one thing, no matter what we do and how blessed we are in our lives, the only thing that really matters is family and the people that we love," Jake shared. "And to me, of course it's incredible to be here and it's so amazing to be in this big movie and to be a part of it, but seeing my dad on this carpet.... his support means everything to me."
