The former One Direction star says he "was aspiring to be in love with someone for the rest of my life."
Zayn Malik seemed to have ex-girlfriend Gigi Hadid on his mind when he wrote his new track, "Let Me."
The former One Direction star alluded to his model ex on Friday when he called into On Air with Ryan Seacrest to discuss that new song. Malik told Seacrest that he wrote the song about eight months ago, when he was still optimistic about that relationship.
“I was in love and I think that's pretty evident and, yeah, I was aspiring to be in love with someone for the rest of my life and the rest of theirs, as we all do,” he said. “Things change, we move forward in life, times change but, yeah, that’s what I was thinking when I wrote it."
Times changed about a month ago when Malik and Hadid broke up after more than two years together. Malik confirmed the split on Twitter after "an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship." The split appears to have been amicable, with both sides wishing the other well in the future.
On Friday, Malik told Seacrest that he didn't have any regrets and chalked it all up to valuable life experience.
"That's the whole point of life, right? We go through experiences so we have memories and stories and things to write down and contemplate and think about," he said.
"You get to really put your experience into something. It should be remembered forever."
He said that there are more songs on the way, along with a full album.
And as for the video for his new track? Seacrest noticed that Malik's female co-star looked suspiciously familiar.
"It looks like Gigi Hadid," Seacrest noted.
