Usher Explains Why He Doesn't Eat Anything on Wednesdays

Usher has some confessions, one of which is that he doesn't eat on Wednesdays.

Usher doesn't eat on Wednesdays.

In a new interview with WSJ Magazine, the GRAMMY-winning musician, 45, revealed why he fasts on Wednesdays, doesn't eat before he works out and how he stays fit.

"I fast, not for religious purposes, but it's something my grandmother practiced," Usher tells the outlet in an interview published Monday. "I fast on Wednesdays. I typically try to start around 11 p.m. the previous day, then go the entire day on Wednesday just drinking water."

If you've ever wondered how Usher takes his eggs in the morning, the "Yeah!" singer has an answer. He revealed his go-to breakfast for when it's not Wednesday.

"I sometimes eat eggs scrambled with cheese. For the most part, I like them poached or over easy," says Usher, who is married to Jennifer "Jenn" Goicoechea.

He added that he's not really a coffee guy, but enjoys drinking celery juice after waking up.

Mornings are also a time where Usher takes a moment to prioritize his well-being, noting, "I try to wake up early enough to have a moment of reflection. Some days I may grab a book and read to stimulate my mind. I may sit quietly and meditate."

Usher also incorporates fasting into his exercise schedule. For the times he's physical, he waits until after he's completed his workout to eat.

"I don't like to eat breakfast before I've worked out or done something physical," he says. "Taking a walk, stretching or doing yoga, sitting in the sun and raising my body's natural heat levels. Then I eat."

The Coming Home artist mixes up his fitness routine.

"Normally, my workout regimen starts either walking or with certain knee activations and reverse walking that I do to really engage my quads, my knees and glutes," he shares. "Other than that, swimming is a really good thing to get me going, and bike riding. Weight lifting, don't do a lot of that."

He continues, "One thing that is a frequent practice is yoga. It really does help to activate my organs and get my mind moving in the right direction—as Tony Robbins would say, 'make my move,' you know what I mean?"

Usher isn't the only star who swears by fasting. Last week, Jesse Plemons credited intermittent fasting for his recent weight loss. Last March, Chris Martin revealed that he doesn't eat dinner -- a diet he said was inspired by Bruce Springsteen. Other stars, including Kourtney Kardashian and Chris Pratt, have detailed their fasting regimens.

ET spoke to celebrity nutritionist Kelly LeVeque in 2020 about the celeb-obsessed health trend.

"It's a phenomenal tool," she said. "The research on it is amazing. It's showing us that it's lowering glucose, which is your blood sugar, your overall A1C, which is blood sugar over a long period of time, triglyceride levels, insulin levels. It really allows your body to burn your own stored fat as well."

Similarly, celebrity trainer Jorge Cruise spoke to ET in 2018 about why intermittent fasting is Hollywood's fast fix to losing weight.

"Intermittent fasting is probably the most effective technique I've ever discovered," he said. "It's the hottest thing in Hollywood."
