The new Showtime drama premieres Sunday, Jan. 7 at 10 p.m.
There's more than meets the eye.
A new trailer for Showtime's upcoming drama The Chi was unveiled on Saturday, showing viewers a deeper look at the coming-of-age-story created by Emmy Award-winning writer Lena Waithe.
"Lay that burden down. Everybody's got one," Common, who serves as executive producer alongside Waithe, says in between various shots of the Chicago skyline and the drama's characters.
The Chi follows a group of residents who become linked by coincidence, but bonded by the need for connection and redemption.
The series also stars Straight Outta Compton breakout star Jason Mitchell, Jacob Latimore, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Alex Hibbert, Yolonda Ross, Armando Riesco and Tiffany Boone.
ET recently caught up with Waithe to talk about The Chi, where she expressed how her goal is to provide a truthful depiction of her hometown.
“I’m really just trying to show people living,” Waithe explained. “I want to show people who are young and black. I want to show what it’s like to have a dream, to have a job, what it’s like to have multiple partners in your life, you know, all those things, and it’s just as simple as that. You know, that’s the weird thing about it: This is normal life.”
The Chi premieres Jan. 7 at 10 p.m. on Showtime.
