The actor will play Captain Christopher Pike in the CBS All Access series.
Star Trek: Discovery is adding another captain.
Anson Mount (Marvel's Inhumans, Hell on Wheels) is joining the season two cast of the original CBS All Access series playing a crucial Star Trek character, CBS' streaming service announced Monday.
Mount will star as Captain Christopher Pike of the USS Enterprise, who was introduced -- though not seen -- in the freshman finale of Star Trek: Discovery. In the final scene of the episode, Captain Pike sent a distress signal from the Enterprise to the Discovery crew.
In Star Trek lore, Captain Pike was first introduced in the original TV series and led the famed ship prior to Captain James T. Kirk. Jeffrey Hunter and Sean Kenney portrayed the character for the small screen, while Bruce Greenwood played Captain Pike in 2009's Star Trek and 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness films.
In February, Star Trek: Discovery executive producer and co-showrunner Aaron Harberts hinted to ET that viewers would be introduced to Captain Pike in season two.
"The thing to consider about Captain Pike is, from an audience and writer's point of view, there is something very exciting about a key character from [Star Trek: The Original Series] who's only been explored in two episodes of the original series -- three if you consider how [the rejected pilot for the original series] 'The Cage' works into the puzzle in TOS," Harberts said. "When we think about the idea of Captain Pike, it opens up some large possibilities. We will never say never to exploring him a little bit more."
Star Trek: Discovery follows the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new life forms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself.
