Squid Game star O Yeong-Su has been sentenced to prison following charges of sexual misconduct.

The 79-year-old actor was convicted on Friday of two counts of sexual harassment and sentenced to eight months in prison, Reuters reports. According to the report, he will also be required to complete 40 hours of attendance at a sexual violence treatment program.

The charges first arose in 2017, and O was indicted in 2022. He has denied the charges and told reporters on Friday that he plans to appeal the decision.

According to the Yonhap news agency, the allegations against O were that he hugged a woman and kissed her on the cheek against her will.

The actor played Oh II-nam in the first season of Squid Game, for which he won the 2022 Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film -- the first South Korean in history to win the award -- and was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Squid Game season 2 is expected to premiere later this year, however, O's character died in the season 1 finale and is not expected to return in the new season.
