Finding love in Hollywood can be hard. Keeping a romance alive can be even harder. From actors to reality TV stars to musicians, here are some of show business' biggest break-ups and most heartbreaking splits of the year.
Ronnie Ortiz-Magro and Jen Harley
The on-again/off-again couple have reportedly broken up again following a blowout fight on New Year's Eve. According to multiple sources, the pair had a tumultuous end to 2018, calling it quits briefly before New Year's Eve, then getting back together only to end the year on Dec. 31 by getting into a screaming altercation that allegedly got physical, one source told E! News, leading to them calling things off once again. The news of their split -- the latest in a long series of break-ups and reconciliations -- comes after the Jersey Shore star scrubbed all traces of his girlfriend off of his Instagram and just a few weeks after Harley posted a super cute family photo for Christmas featuring the volatile pair, their 8-month-old daughter together, Ariana, and Harley's son, Mason, from a previous relationship, all rocking matching snowflake pajama sets.
Jonathan Van Ness and Wilco Froneman
The Queer Eye star took to Instagram on Dec. 31 to announce that he and his boyfriend parted ways. Van Ness took a cue from Ariana Grande in his post, using lyrics from her song "thank u, next" in his caption, but he also urged fans to not to attack the rugby player. "?️??️??️? Please don’t go in on Wilco, he doesn’t need the anger & I don’t want to see him suffer," the reality star wrote. "So just know I’m all good & sometimes people break up the love — Love you all so much ???." Just hours before Van Ness' post, the former couple -- who made their relationship public back in September -- appeared to be at the same ice skating rink, and they took a photo together as recently as Christmas.
Usher and Grace Miguel
The "Yeah" crooner filed for divorce from his estranged wife on Dec. 28. The news came nine months after the couple announced their separation. Usher and Grace released a joint statement to ET on March 6, confirming that they were calling it quits after two years of marriage. "After much thought and consideration we have mutually decided to separate as a couple," the statement read. "We remain deeply connected, loving friends who will continue supporting each other through the next phases of our lives. The enormous amount of love and respect that we have for each other will only increase as we move forward." The pair secretly tied the knot while vacationing together in Cuba in September 2015 after nearly 10 years together.
Michael Fishman and Jennifer Briner
The Conners actor and his wife, Jennifer Briner, separated after 19 years of marriage. Briner filed for legal separation from Fishman on Dec.27. The pair got married in 1999 and have two children together.
Fishman told TMZ that the decision to separate was amicable and they filed the documents together. He also said that they had been in the process of splitting amicably since June 2017, but were delayed after production on Roseanne was halted.
Forest Whitaker and Keisha Nash
Whitaker filed for divorce from his wife after 22 years of marriage. In documents obtained by ET, the 57-year-old actor submitted the paperwork to end his marriage on Dec. 27, citing irreconcilable differences as reason for the split.
The pair got married on May 4, 1996. They share two daughters together: Sonnet, 22, and True, 20, and each has a child from previous relationships.
Kristen Stewart and Stella Maxwell
Another couple called it quits. The Charlie's Angels star and the 28-year-old Victoria's Secret model have broken up, according to multiple reports. News of their split comes after Stewart was spotted holding hands with stylist Sara Dinkin while grabbing breakfast in Los Angeles on Dec. 20.
E! News reported that Stewart and Maxwell "are still in touch, but decided it was best to see other people," adding that they separated earlier this year.
Hailee Steinfeld and Niall Horan
After a few months of dating, the two recently called it quits, multiple outlets report. ET has reached out to Steinfeld and Horan's reps for comment. Rumors started swirling in February that the Bumblebee star was dating the former One Direction heartthrob after they were spotted together in Las Vegas, but earlier this month, fans began speculating that they had already broken up after the singer did not publicly wish Steinfeld a happy birthday on Dec. 11. On top of that, the actress was also spotted hanging out with her ex-boyfriend, Cameron Smoller, one month prior.
Alexis Ren and Alan Bersten
The couple, who met and started dating during season 27 of Dancing With the Stars, called it quits due to their busy schedules, ET learned on Dec. 7. "Alexis is in Japan working and Alan is in L.A. rehearsing [for the DWTS Live! Tour] … so the distance makes it hard to be in a relationship," a source told ET at the time. "But they still talk and are definitely still friends and on good terms… they’re planning on staying in touch and staying in each other’s lives."
Michelle Williams and Chad Johnson
The couple has ended their engagement for a second time, Williams revealed via her Instagram Story on Dec. 7, the same day she released her new single, "Fearless." In the since-deleted post, Williams called herself single but implied that the two split on good terms. "I still remain fearless," she wrote in white text over a black background. "I guess I still remain single! Things didn't work out. The healing that needs to take place is a must! I don't wanna destroy another relationship. Blessings to him, his family and ministry. #FEARLESS."
Williams, who revealed on Instagram in July that she had sought help for depression, shared in October that she had secretly called off her engagement to Johnson before checking into a mental health facility. However, the pair, who got engaged in March after about a year of dating, later rekindled their romance.
Cardi B and Offset
The Invasion of Privacy rapper took to Instagram on Dec. 4 to share a lengthy video revealing the news that she and her husband have called it quits and plan to divorce. "We're really good friends, and you know we're really good business partners, and you know, he's always somebody that I run to to talk to and we got a lot of love for each other. But things just haven't been working out between us for a long time," Cardi said, in part, in her message to fans. "It's nobody's fault, it's just like, I guess we grew out of love. But we're not together anymore."
The rapper said that it "might take time to get a divorce" but that she will "always have a lot of love" for the Migos rapper. The pair secretly tied the knot in September 2017, only revealing the news that they were married this past June. However, their relationship was marred by multiple allegations of infidelity leveled against Offset after the pair announced they were expecting their first child, a daughter named Kulture whom they welcomed in July.
Ross Matthews and Salvador Camarena
The 39-year-old television personality announced on Instagram on Nov. 25 that he and his longtime boyfriend broke up. "After nearly ten years together, Salvador and I have decided that the time has come to part ways," Mathews wrote alongside a black-and-white photo of the two, who started dating in 2008. "This split is amicable and filled with kindness, compassion and a genuine love for one another. As we go forward, each of us feels as if he has a cheerleader in our corner -- a family member for life. We are happy. Thank you all for your well wishes and love." Camarena shared the exact same statement on his own Instagram page, adding the hashtag "consciousuncoupling."
The couple has been public about their relationship, appearing on House Hunters in 2013 while shopping for a home in Palm Springs. They also made an appearance together on Celebrity Family Feud last year and donated their earnings to the Palm Springs Animal Shelter.
Robert De Niro and Grace Hightower
The two-time Oscar winner and his wife called it quits after 21 years of marriage, ET learned on Nov. 20. The couple -- who share two children, son Elliot, born in 1998, and daughter Helen, born in 2011 -- tied the knot in 1997 after several years of dating, then briefly split up in 1999, though they never finalized their divorce. The couple later renewed their vows in 2004.
Natalie Dormer and Anthony Byrne
The Game of Thrones actress and her beau of 11 years have called it quits. The 36-year-old actress and the 43-year-old director met on The Tudors set, started dating in 2007 and got engaged in 2011. According to the New Statesmen, the two split after promoting In Darkness earlier this summer, which Dormer produced and co-wrote and Byrne directed. Dormer even described how difficult it was to work and write with a significant other during interviews over the past couple of years, though in her interview with the British magazine, she only had kind words to say about her ex.
Paris Hilton and Chris Zylka
In mid-November, multiple outlets reported that Hilton and Zylka broke up and called off their engagement several weeks ago, though they were photographed together at public events in October. The pair started dating over two years ago, after they connected at Art Basel in Miami, Florida, and Zylka proposed to Hilton in January during their ski trip to Aspen, Colorado, with a massive, pear-shaped sparkler worth $2 million. Before their split, they each had nothing but amazing things to say about each other during recent interviews with ET, including Hilton gushing in March, "I feel like I'm glowing and just feel... I don't know, just like a woman. Just like an adult. Like, I don't know. I feel like my life is finally just starting."
Hilton also confirmed to ET in June that she had already picked out a wedding dress and selected some of the members of her bridal party. She was planning to have her sister, Nicky Hilton, stand by her side as maid of honor.
Nastia Liukin and Matthew Lombardi
More than three years after getting engaged, the pair has called it quits. The former Olympic gymnast's and Lombardi "split over the summer," per multiple reports. The athlete announced her engagement in June of 2015.

According to court documents obtained by ET, the 44-year-old reality star filed for divorce from her NBA icon husband on Nov. 2, citing irreconcilable differences. She's asking for joint legal and physical custody of their four minor children, as well as spousal support and attorney's fees to be paid by Scottie. “It is with deep sadness that Scottie and I announce that we are legally separating," Larsa told ET. "We have both tried very hard for a long time to make our marriage work and have ultimately come to the conclusion that it is best that we live separate lives. We have so many amazing memories together, remain best of friends and love each other very much." The pair, who tied the knot in 1997, previously filed for divorce in 2016, but ended up reconciling last year.
Shawn Booth and Kaitlyn Bristowe
The Bachelorette couple -- who got engaged on season 11 of the show in 2015 -- have decided to call it quits, they said in a statement to ET on Nov. 2. Booth and Bristowe were the longest-running engaged pair to come out of the series. "After three incredible years, we have decided to go our separate ways. This difficult decision comes after thoughtful, respectful consideration. Even though we are parting as a couple, we’re very much committed to remaining friends. We have both evolved as people, which is taking us in different directions, but with the hope that we will continue to support each other in new ways," their statement reads. "Due to the nature of how we met, our relationship has always been very public, and we have enjoyed sharing it with all of you, but we ask that you respect our decision and our privacy at this time."
Olivia Culpo and Danny Amendola
It's over -- again. The former Miss Universe 2012 and the Miami Dolphins wide receiver called it quits in late October after Amendola was spotted getting cozy on a Miami beach with sports reporter Bianca Peters while Culpo was in Australia, according to multiple reports. This isn't the first time that they've parted ways this year; in March, Culpo originally confirmed that she had split from the athlete after two years of dating.
Chloe Bennet and Logan Paul
A few months after rekindling their relationship, the couple split up again, a source told ET in mid-October. Bennet and Paul made their red carpet debut as a couple at San Diego Comic-Con in July, a year after they were first spotted kissing in Hawaii. "They very much care about each other but their lives are not compatible right now,” ET's source says of the former couple. “They’re taking time to just focus on themselves." ET has reached out to Bennet and Paul's reps for comment.
Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson
News broke on Oct. 14 that, after five months together, and a shocking engagement, the "Dangerous Woman" singer and the Saturday Night Live star have parted ways. A source told ET that the pair broke up due to bad timing. Neither Grande nor Davidson has yet to publicly speak out about the breakup.
Brandon and Leah Jenner
The 37-year-old son of Caitlyn Jenner and Linda Thompson announced that he and his wife were calling it quits after six years of marriage. "Hi everybody, it is with love in our hearts that we feel its time to share some personal news with you all," he wrote on Instagram on Sept. 10 in a statement that Leah also shared on her page. "After celebrating 14 beautiful years together, we have lovingly come to the decision to end the romantic aspect of our relationship. We are deeply proud of the life we've cultivated together and are truly grateful for the bond of friendship we hold and cherish today." The pair, who also worked together professionally as indie-pop group Brandon & Leah, first became friends in middle school. They wed in Hawaii in May 2012 and welcomed daughter Eva James in March 2015.

The two wed on July 24, 1994, and list their date of separation as July 25, 2017, one day after their 23rd wedding anniversary.
Noah Cyrus and Lil Xan
The young couple -- who had only been dating for a few months but had already declared their love for one another and had collaborated on new music -- broke up in a very public way over Labor Day weekend after Lil Xan accused his girlfriend of cheating on him via his Instagram story. "I feel like I’m probably being cheated on," the 21-year-old rapper wrote in a since-deleted post. Soon after, Cyrus took to Instagram to explain that Lil Xan believed she was cheating on him because she texted him a meme featuring singer Charlie Puth's head photoshopped onto a naked porn star's body. And it only got weirder -- and kept going on social media -- from there.
Danielle Staub and Marty Caffrey
Four months after tying the knot, Caffrey filed for divorce from the 56-year-old Real Housewives of New Jersey star on Aug. 14 at a courthouse in New Jersey. The RHONJ star married Caffrey in an intimate ceremony on the Bahamian island of Bimini back in May. The ceremony was filmed by Bravo cameras for the upcoming ninth season of RHONJ, following Staub's return as a "friend of" the housewives in the show's eighth season. However, a couple months after their nuptials, the twosome began having marital troubles. They pair verbally sparred in the press and in early August, Staub was granted a temporary restraining order against her husband after an alleged incident at the couple's Englewood, New Jersey, home.
Lauren Bushnell and Devin Antin

The pair, who sparked their romance shortly after her split from Higgins, had been friends before they started dating.
Ben Affleck and Lindsay Shookus

They’re amicable.” The news came after the 46-year-old actor was seen hanging out with 22-year-old Playboy model Shauna Sexton, sparking romance rumors.
Rhea Butcher and Cameron Esposito
The married comedians shared nearly identical statements to Twitter on Aug. 8, explaining that they "are separating to live individual lives for a time." "We care very much about each other & that’s why we’re doing this," read both statements. "We’re gonna talk to our friends about it & be pretty private in public. Thanks for your kindness and understanding." Butcher and Esposito wed in 2015 in Chicago, Illinois, where both started their stand-up careers. The two worked together on a number of projects, including writing and starring in the Seeso show Take My Wife and co-hosting the live stand-up comedy podcast Put Your Hands Together With Cameron Esposito.
Kourtney Kardashian and Younes Bendjima
The reality star and her model boyfriend called it quits in early August after nearly two years of dating. A source told ET that Kardashian and Bendjima felt the relationship “was’t working,” and decided to go their separate ways. Karadashian was the one who “initiated the split,” the source added. Kardashian 39, and Bendjima, 25, began dating in 2016, and it didn’t take long before the two were inseparable, jetting off to romantic getaways around the world and posting steamy snapshots on social media. But the couple’s age gap ultimately played a part in their break up. Although Bendjima is “mature for his age,” he and Kardashian are at “different stages in their lives.”
Hayden Panettiere and Wladimir Klitschko
The 28-year-old actress and the 42-year-old retired professional boxer reportedly called off their engagement, a source shared with ET in August. Last year, Panettiere, who voluntarily checked into rehab in 2015 for postpartum depression reflected on the experience and how it helped her become a better mother. "You feel off. You don't feel like yourself," she explained to Good Morning America at the time. "But you know, women are so resilient and that's the incredible thing about them. I think I'm all the stronger for it. I think I'm a better mom because of it, because you never take that connection for granted.”
Millie Bobby Brown and Jacob Sartorius
The 14-year-old Stranger Things star and her 15-year-old musician boyfriend announced their split on their respective Instagram Stories on July 31. "The decision with Jacob and I was completely mutual. We are both happy and remaining friends," Brown wrote in her post, which Sartorius echoed in a near-identical statement. On Brown's birthday in February, Sartorius even called her the "funniest, most caring person."

We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives." Cena, 40, was previously married to Elizabeth Huberdeau from 2009 to 2012. Vardalos, who listed the date of their separation as July 29, 2017, is seeking joint legal and physical custody of their daughter, Ilaria, whom they adopted in 2008. The pair released a joint statement to ET addressing their split, sharing, "We’ve been respectfully separated for a lengthy period of time," the pair explained. It is our hope that decency will prevail on the reporting of this story which will soon be yesterday’s news. Thank you for respecting our privacy."

He's in Chicago, so busy with CouponCabin," the 42-year-old reality star expressed, adding, "We're broken up right now. But I'll tell you this; we break up all the time. The media doesn’t get a hold of it the way they did this time." In the previous week's episode of RHONY, Mortimer had been so excited about reuniting with Kluth that she went wedding dress shopping with her mom, even though she's not engaged. She also got emotional while FaceTiming her doctor and seeing pictures of her frozen egg, but the TV personality admitted to Cohen that their breakup "has zero to do with [last week's episode]."
Jillian Michaels and Heidi Rhoades
Michaels took to Instagram on June 15 to announce that she and her longtime partner have been separated "for a while now." "You've all been with me through it all so I'm sharing some news with you ... Heidi and I have been split for a while now," the former Biggest Loser trainer wrote. "We've found we're better friends and parents living apart than staying together." Michaels and Rhoades had been together since 2009.
