Quitting the Band: Musicians Who Left Popular Groups

After much speculation, singer Camila Cabello officially left the girl group on Dec. 18, 2016. "After 4 and a half years of being together, we have been informed via her representatives that Camila has decided to leave Fifth Harmony," a statement posted to 5H's social media accounts read in part. "We wish her well." The group shared their first Camila-free group pic less than three weeks later.

On March 25, 2015, Zayn Malik (center) announced that he was leaving the massively successful boy band, which was formed by Simon Cowell on British singing competition show The X Factor. Malik cited his desire to live as a "normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight." The group will continue as a foursome.

The pop-punk band planned to start recording their seventh studio album in January 2015, but delays from guitarist and vocalist Tom DeLonge (left) led to Mark Hoppus telling Rolling Stone, "This is exactly the same sequence of events that happened when Blink broke up 10 years ago." The band has since performed several shows with Alkaline Trio vocalist/guitarist Matt Skiba filling in for DeLonge, but there is currently no word on a permanent lineup change or replacement decision.

After massive success in the late '90s and early 2000s, original BSB member Kevin Richardson (far left) left the boy band in 2006 to pursue other interests. The remaining foursome released two more albums before reuniting with Richardson in 2012 to release their first independent album In a World Like This. The reunion was also chronicled in the group's 2015 documentary Backstreet Boys: Show 'Em What You're Made Of.

Though original member Michael McCary (far right) left the R&B group in 2003 due to health issues, Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman continue to tour worldwide as a trio. 

Beyonce Knowles and Kelly Rowland are the only members who have been a part of every lineup of Destiny's Child. Original members LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett left the group in 2000, after the release of The Writing's on the Wall album and the "Say My Name" music video. They were replaced by Michelle Williams and Farrah Franklin (second from left), though Franklin left the group five months after joining, leaving Knowles, Rowland, and Williams as a threesome.

The boy band, assembled on the first season of the 2000 ABC reality show Making the Band, originally included singer Ikaika Kahoano, who dropped out and was replaced by finalist Dan Miller (far right). The group disbanded in 2003, but reunited as a foursome, minus Ashley Parker Angel (second from right), in 2013.

After "Ginger Spice" Geri Halliwell left the girl group in April 1998, the Spice Girls continued to perform and tour as a foursome before going on an indefinite hiatus in 2000. The original five reunited for a tour in 2007 and performed together at the 2012 London Olympics. 

In 1998, Journey replaced lead singer Steve Perry with former Tyketto and Tall Stories frontman Steve Augeri, who stayed with the band until 2006. In December 2007, the band hired Filipino singer Arnel Pineda (far right), after guitarist Neal Schon saw him singing with his Journey cover band The Zoo on YouTube.

Keep up if you can. Original Van Halen lead singer David Lee Roth was replaced by Sammy Hagar (second from left) in 1985. Hagar fronted the band until his departure in 1996 and was replaced by former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone. Cherone left in 1999 after the poor commercial performance of Van Halen III and the band went on hiatus. In 2003, Hagar reunited with the Van Halen for a worldwide tour before leaving again in 2005 and being replaced by, you guessed it, original lead singer Roth. 

Original Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne was dismissed from the band in 1979 due to his drug and alcohol abuse and replaced with former Rainbow frontman Ronnie James Dio. Osbourne reunited with the band in 2011 and the heavy metal group is reportedly working on their 20th studio album and planning a final tour.

The Puerto Rican boy band was a revolving door of teen talent from its inception in the 1970s until the final iteration of the group, which disbanded in 2009. In total, the group had more than 30 alumni, the most famous of which being Latin pop star Ricky Martin.

When original lead singer Peter Gabriel (far left) left to pursue a solo career in 1975, the British rock band found his replacement sitting behind their drum kit. Phil Collins (second from left) took the mic and remains the band's lead singer to this day.

Original frontman Syd Barrett (front) left the English rock band in April 1968, due to deteriorating mental health. After his departure, Roger Waters (far left) stepped up as the group's primary lyricist, constructing some of the band's biggest hit albums like Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here.
