PATTERN Beauty by Tracee Ellis Ross keeps curls in mind. But how does their latest hot styling tool shape up?
Actress, producer and director Tracee Ellis Ross is a trendsetter in many ways, and one avenue where she's blazing trails is in the hair care space as the founder of PATTERN Beauty.
Known for products that style, protect, enhance and love on curls of all shapes and sizes, PATTERN Beauty has branched into the hot hair tools sector, first with the launch of the blow dryer in 2023 and now with the introduction of a lux new curling iron.
Inspired by Tracee Ellis Ross' days sitting in the stylist's chair on set, the three barrel sizes are not only made to add curls to a style but are also meant to complement and bring uniformity to natural curl patterns.
The Interchangeable Curling Iron by PATTERN Beauty
It's here: A curling iron made with naturally curly hair in mind. The three interchangeable barrels of this hot new curling iron make it easy to get the curl shape and size that's right for you.
The PATTERN Beauty curling iron is a marvel to look at. But of course, we wondered if it could back up the claims of how well it worked. So when the people at PATTERN Beauty asked us to try it, we jumped at the chance. Below, read our honest review of the new Interchangeable Curling Iron by PATTERN Beauty to determine whether you should scoop one up for your strands.
Hi, I'm Dajah Costin, a Commerce Manager here at ETonline.com. After hearing about the new Interchangeable Curling Iron from PATTERN Beauty, I was intrigued. I have a 4a/4b curl pattern and normally get silk presses to wear my hair straight. I love a bit of curl to give my hair body, and I was excited when the good people at PATTERN Beauty offered to send me the curling iron to use and review.
When I got the product in the mail, I thought the packaging was beautiful. As soon as I opened it, I saw a gorgeous picture of Tracee Ellis Ross along with the story behind her development of the product. Then I saw the curling iron, which has a beautiful design. Each of the three different iron sizes can attach to the main barrel, and the iron comes with a glove and a storage bag to hold it all. I also received a heat protectant and other products I can use if needed between silk presses.

Tracee's Before Heat Styling Set

Finding the right barrel size was a mission of trial and error. First, because I have chest-length hair (when straightened) I started with the largest barrel, but it didn't give me the curl I wanted. I was looking for tighter curls that I could finger-comb through to create body and bounce. But that's why having three options is key because when I tried the smallest barrel, it gave me what I was after.
I've learned that you know you have a good curling iron if you don't smell your hair burning and you're able to get a good curl without using a dangerous, potentially damaging level of heat. With the PATTERN Beauty iron, I never smelled burnt hair. I set it at just 250 degrees when I used the larger barrel. For the tighter barrel, I raised the temperature to 275 degrees, left my strands wrapped in it for a few seconds, and boom — the curl was there. So I never had to use too much heat to get the look I wanted.
When I curled my hair with the smallest barrel, my curl bounced right up. I was like "Alright!" I love how the iron has a swivel cord, so as I'm turning it it moves and it's so flexible, which makes styling smooth and comfortable. It's a small detail, but I also love how you can lock the barrels in. I first started styling without the glove. I only accidentally touched the hot iron a few times before I remembered that I could use the glove to prevent burnt fingertips. It makes it so much easier to manipulate the iron as I'm styling.
I also love the automatic shut-off feature. I left the iron in the bathroom and went to make a cup of coffee and I didn't have to worry about the iron staying on or damaging my vanity. I love the storage bag, because I normally just toss my hot tools in a basket I have, but I want to treat this PATTERN Beauty curling iron with care, so I love that it has its own little pouch where everything fits.
So when it comes down to it, would I suggest the PATTERN Beauty Interchangeable Curling Iron to others? Yes, I would for sure suggest this curling iron to my friends. First of all, it's a really pretty iron. The color is beautiful. I was able to achieve the style I was after with ease, and after using the iron, my hair still felt soft and not at all burnt to a crisp.
Growing up I used to buy drugstore curling irons and that's what I used. But the PATTERN Beauty curling iron is such good quality. It feels like you're getting a really good product that's not going to break down or stop working after a short time. It's priced similarly to other top-tier curling irons on the market right now, yet does so much more in my opinion for people with thicker textures and naturally curly hair.
