Nicolas Cage Shares Rare Comments on Having 3 Kids With 3 Different Women: 'That's What's Happened'

Nicolas Cage makes rare comments about his unexpected path of parenthood.

For Nicolas Cage, being a family man comes first.

While the 60-year-old Oscar winner is juggling multiple projects, he makes it clear in a new interview with The New Yorker that fatherhood is his main focus. Or, as he put it, it's "like breathing."

But, as the devoted dad acknowledges in rare comments about his relationship history, having children with three different women was not initially how he expected his life to unfold.

"Each one has a different mother. It's not what I had originally thought would happen when I fell in love or got married -- that I would have three different children with three different moms -- but nonetheless that's what's happened. So every child is different. There's a different kind of level of attention."

Cage is dad to son Weston, 33, with ex Christina Fulton, son Kal-El, 18, with ex-wife Alice Kim, and daughter August, 1 -- named after his dad, August Coppola -- with his wife of three years, Riko Shibata. Cage was previously married four times before Shibata, including to Patricia Arquette and Lisa Marie Presley.

"I've been very immersed in raising my daughter," he tells The New Yorker of his soon-to-be 2 year old.

Notes Cage, "My first daughter -- so this is all different levels of worry and protection and taking it into overdrive."

The Dream Scenario star summarizes his powerful outlook on parenthood as compared with his longtime profession, telling the magazine, "It's like breathing. Everything is about her. You know, I can make a movie or not make a movie. I can't stop being a dad. With her, it’s life. It's my survival."

Back in November 2023, Cage addressed his priorities in an interview with ET after welcoming his daughter and approaching his 60th birthday.

"I'm taking stock of what's really important, you know?" he said. "Maybe not make quite as many movies... It's profound [being a new dad], yeah, totally new experience. I love it."

Plus, having another baby gave him the opportunity to see life through fresh eyes. "Reliving the experience of childhood -- it brings it all back," he told ET in March 2023, "and seeing how she's discovering new experiences. I can't wait for her to try lobster."
