Chris Martin joined his band Coldplay on stage in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Tuesday and opened the first show of their North American tour with a touching tribute.

Martin began the show by sitting down at the piano and playing a stripped-down version of Linkin Park’s “Crawling,” the GRAMMY-winning hit off the group’s debut album, Hybrid Theory.
The cover was meant as a tribute to the late Chester Bennington, who died in late July after committing suicide at the age of 41.
Following the lead singer’s death, Linkin Park’s official Instagram account posted an open letter to the later musician.
“Dear Chester, Our hearts are broken. The shockwaves of grief and denial are still sweeping through our family as we come to grips with what has happened,” the group wrote. “You touched so many lives, maybe even more than you realized. In the past few days, we’ve seen an outpouring of love and support, both public and private from around the world.”
