The details behind Derek Hough's nasty Dancing with the Stars injury.
Derek Hough's injury Monday during late night rehearsals for Dancing with the Stars' 10th anniversary special landed him in the ER, and couldn't come at a worse time for him -- especially since he's working on both DWTS in Los Angeles and the New York Spring Spectacular show in New York City.
Just hours before the injury, the 29-year-old dancer even told ET that he was actually in better shape now than he has been in previous seasons.
"It's funny, when I'm actually here [LA], by this [point in the] season, I'm normally a lot more sore, a lot more tired," he admitted. "I think it's because I've personally been taking care of myself so much more than I used to. I'm getting a cardio workout everyday doing the shows so I actually feel more in shape than I normally do at this point."

Unfortunately, that changed Monday night when Derek ended up in the hospital. According to Maria Menounos, Derek's former DWTS partner who he was practicing a routine with for the anniversary special, he hurt his foot after he smashed it on a piece of equipment. Maria tells E! News that he then injured himself further when he fell down the stairs when he grabbed ice to put on his foot, rolling his ankle.
"Really angry at this stupid stair for hurting our @derekhough out last night. Ugh....#DWTS #DWTS20 #badstair #menough??" she Instagrammed Tuesday, after his fall.
She also shared a video of the two rehearsing prior to his injury, in which she's the one who actually gets injured when she bumps her head on the dance floor.
Derek was accompanied to the hospital by his pal and fellow DWTS pro Mark Ballas.
"Long night in the ER with @derekhough nothing worse than seeing a fellow dancer get hurt especially your brother," Mark captioned a pic of him pushing Derek in a wheelchair in a now-deleted Instagram post (which Maria reposted).
Derek also posted a pic of both of his feet bandaged on Instagram, writing, "Just getting home from the hospital. Not the best of news. I'm in utter disbelief." He also later deleted the update.
No word yet on how Derek's injury will affect his future on the show this season, but a source tells E! News he may have broken a toe, as well as severely sprained his ankle, suffering possible ligament damage. An MRI is reportedly scheduled for today to see just how serious the injury to his ankle is.
But Derek told ET on Monday that he's used to performing "in pain."
"When you're used to pain, you know, someone's like, 'Oh my ankle hurts, or my... I don't know why I did this, my boob hurts,' but no, you get used to it, you have to be," he shared. "You're never 100 percent."
Dancing with the Stars: 10th Anniversary Special airs Tuesday, April 28, on ABC.
