BUZZMAKERS: Person of the Year & Kate's Baby
What had ETonline readers buzzing this week?
1. Pope Francis Is Time's 2013 Person Of the Year
Pope Francis has earned the title of Time magazine's 2013 Person Of the Year.
This will be the third pope of the Catholic church to earn this title, but the 76-year-old Pope Francis was just elected on March 13, 2013. "At a time when the limits of leadership are being tested in so many places, along comes a man with no army or weapons, no kingdom beyond a tight fist of land in the middle of Rome but with the immense wealth and weight of history behind him, to throw down a challenge," managing editor Nancy Gibbs explains why Francis is the magazine's choice.
"When he kisses the face of a disfigured man or washes the feet of a Muslim woman, the image resonates far beyond the boundaries of the Catholic Church."
Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told the TODAY show, who announced the Person Of the Year on Tuesday morning, in a statement: "The Holy Father is not looking to become famous or to receive honors. But if the choice of Person of Year helps spread the message of the gospel -- a message of God's love for everyone -- he will certainly be happy about that."
Other people to make the list included Edward Snowden, gay rights activist Edith Windsor, Syrian President Bashar Assad and the Tea Party's Sen. Ted Cruz.
2. Kate Winslet Welcomes Baby Boy!
Kate Winslet and husband Ned Rocknroll have welcomed their first child into the world.
Winslet's rep has confirmed to ET that Winlset gave birth to a baby boy on Saturday in Sussex County, UK.
"Mother and baby are doing great," her rep said in a statement.
The 38-year-old actress announced in June that she and Rocknroll, whom she married in December 2012, were expecting their first child together.
Winlset has two other children-a 13-year-old daughter named Mia and a son Joe, who will soon turn 10-from a pair of previous marriages.
Congrats to the couple on their newborn!
3. Taye Diggs and Idina Menzel Separate
After 10 years of marriage, Best Man Holiday star Taye Diggs and Glee actress Idina Menzel have separated, according to People.
"Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs have jointly decided to separate at this time. Their primary focus and concern is for their son. We ask that you respect their privacy during this time," the couple's reps told People.
After meeting in the '90s while co-starring in the musical Rent, Diggs and Menzel, both now age 42, were married in January 2003. They have one child together, a four-year-old son named Walker.
Prior to their separation, Menzel told People earlier this year of her marriage, "We work at it. I'm not going to glamorize it or glorify it -- we go through tough times like everybody else, but we love each other very much. We try not to be away from each other for more than two weeks at a time, and we try to find new ways to communicate."
4. 'Little Couple' Star Reveals Details About Cancer
After revealing last week that she's currently fighting cancer, The Little Couple star Jen Arnold is opening up about her latest health challenge.
"There are moments I feel just terrible," the 39-year-old Arnold tells People magazine. "I can't believe it is happening. Other times, I feel like this is just a bump in the road."
Arnold explains that she first experienced symptoms while in India earlier this year with her husband Bill Klein and three-year-old son Will to pick up their two-year-old daughter Zoey, who they adopted from China. During the trip, Arnold said she experienced bleeding and decided to return home to Houston by herself for treatment after speaking with her OB-GYN.
"My initial thoughts were all about Zoey. But then the bleeding got worse and I was feeling light-headed. It was a hard decision, but I had to go home," she explained. Arnold, a neonatologist at Texas Children's Hospital, was then diagnosed with stage 3 choriocarcinoma, a rare cancer that began with a non-viable pregnancy (the embryo had no heartbeat) she suffered in September.
"The one time I get pregnant, I get cancer," said Arnold, who eventually had a hysterectomy after a cancerous mass in her uterus didn't initially respond to chemotherapy. Her doctor, Dr. Concepcion R. Diaz-Arrastia, has conducted extensive research and contacted specialists around the country to calculate the appropriate dosage of chemotherapy.
Arnold's cancer battle will be documented in future episodes of TLC's The Little Couple.
