Inspired by true events, Emperor takes place in the days following Emperor Hirohito's World War II surrender in 1945 following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. General Douglas MacArthur (played by Tommy Lee Jones) finds himself the de facto ruler of Japan, and gives his expert of Japanese culture, General Fellers (played by Fox), just 10 short days to decide if the Japanese Emperor is guilty or innocent of war crimes. Worshiped as a god by his people but facing the noose, does he deserve to be be punished or saved? Both decisions have serious consequences, and within that time Fellers is also determined to track down his long-lost Japanese love (newcomer Eriko Hatsune).
