Meghan Trainor is sharing the story of the time she got "really high" while on vocal rest before a surgery.
Meghan Trainor once took "too many edibles" and almost landed in the hospital.
On the July 8 episode of the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard and Monica Padman, the 30-year-old "Me Too" singer opened up about a terrifying experience she had while awaiting vocal cord surgery. Trainor -- who started singing at the age of 6 -- was advised by her doctor not to use her voice in the months leading up to the procedure, which caused her to turn to cannabis in the edible form to cope.
"She's like, 'I'm going to put you with this vocal coach and do these warm-ups -- I need you to be quiet,'" Trainor shared of her team's advice. "For four months, I did that. Then I ate too many edibles while doing that and I lost my mind and then panic disorder started, then I had panic attacks."
"All from the edible experience?" Shepard, 49, asked as Trainor responded in the affirmative.
"I took 50 milligrams on accident," the GRAMMY Award-winning songwriter shared, adding, "I opened up a demon in my head."
According to the "Lips Are Movin" crooner, while she was mostly utilizing coffee beans with 5mg of cannabis throughout the four months of waiting, she accidentally overdosed by eating two 25-milligram cannabis lollipops. She joked that she forgot about eating the first lollipop entirely, a bad sign of how she was already "really high" by the time she started on the second sucker. The issue came to a head when the second sucker kicked in.
"I was doing a puzzle and I stopped breathing and I was like, 'Oh Daryl,'" Trainor explained, referencing her husband, Daryl Sabara. "My soul left my body and then it came back later and I was dry heaving all night. It was horrible."
Luckily, she says that her husband -- whom she wed in 2018 and shares sons Riley, 3, and Barry, 1, with -- did not end up having to take her to the emergency room. The solution ended up being a little more low-stakes than that.
"My best friend and my husband sat in bed with me all night and I was like, 'Just make sure I don't die when I close my eyes.' And we watched like Pixar all night," she shared, laughing about the hilarious (in retrospect) story.
The aside comes as Trainor is promoting her brand new album, Timeless, which is her first new record since 2022. She recently spoke with ET about the project and her tour alongside her 32-year-old hubby and brother Ryan Trainor for a special edition of "Spilling the E-Tea."
When asked why now is the right time to take her act on the road -- she last toured nearly a decade ago in 2016 for her Untouchable Tour -- the mom of two said that she finally feels comfortable enough with her music and her family to head out on a major endeavor.
"I finally have recovered from my second C-section, both my kids can almost walk all the way, you know, Barry is working on walking, so I think he's at a better place to travel. And this sixth album I'm putting out called Timeless is my favorite album I've ever done and I'm the most proud of it, and I think it deserves a tour," she shared.
Trainor added, "I think the fans most importantly deserve a tour 'cause we have not done this in seven years and I really miss them and I miss performing and singing with them and I got a lot of catch up to do, you know? There's so many songs I get to finally perform. It's been way too long."
The Timeless Tour, featuring special guests Chris Olsen and Ryan Trainor, kicks off on Sept. 4 while Meghan’s album, Timeless, is out now.
