In a heartbreaking Instagram post on Monday, GRAMMY-winning artist Lizzo announced the passing of her beloved dog, Pooka Diamanté Jefferson, who left the world on Christmas Eve.
The singer shared a touching tribute alongside a photo of her mother, Shari Johnson-Jefferson, cradling Pooka, while Lizzo and her sister, Vanessa Jefferson, lovingly gazed at their cherished companion.
"We will always love you, Pooka Diamanté Jefferson. 4•10•2005 - 12•24•2023," Lizzo wrote, inviting condolences from fans and friends alike in the comments. SZA expressed her grief, commenting, "Wait nooo !! I’m so honored to have met you🥲😞."
Later, Lizzo took to Instagram again to share her profound sadness, stating, "I’m not ok, I’m so heartbroken. RIP Pooka." The post featured a carousel of 10 photos, showcasing the memorable moments shared between Lizzo and Pooka. A touching keepsake with Pooka's paw print was also shared.
Amidst her personal struggles, including a lawsuit from former backup dancers, Lizzo has been candid about her journey toward self-improvement. In a recent Instagram post, she shared a photo donned in a white bathrobe, revealing her commitment to working on various aspects of her life.
"Hi. I’m working... on music, myself, relationships with people and food, my anxiety, my body, my business, and my trust issues with the world... but they are deep now, deeper than they’ve ever been. Xoxo," she captioned the photo.
Lizzo's dedication to self-improvement and advocacy for marginalized communities has remained unwavering. Despite facing legal challenges, she received the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award at the 2023 Black Music Action Coalition Gala in September. During her acceptance speech, Lizzo pledged to maintain her authenticity and continue amplifying the voices of the marginalized.
"It's easy to do the right thing when everybody's watching you, and it's what you do in those moments where nobody's watching that defines who you are," Lizzo declared. "I'm going to continue to shine a light on the people who are helping people because they deserve it. I'm going to continue to amplify the voices of marginalized people because I have a microphone and I know how to use it."
She concluded by affirming her commitment to creating safe spaces for Black women, emphasizing, "That's what the f**k I do."
