"I just like to think we’re somewhere in the middle."
Liam Payne and Cheryl Cole are not perfect, but that doesn't mean they're headed for a breakup.
In an interview with the U.K.'s Evening Standard, the 24-year-old singer opens up about dating the 34-year-old entertainer for nearly two years, and the constant speculation surrounding their relationship.
"The funniest thing was a week before we were getting married. The next week we’re splitting up," he quips. "And the thing for me is, I just like to think we’re somewhere in the middle."
Payne explains, "You know, we have our struggles. Like, of course, I’m not gonna sit here and say that everything’s absolutely fine and dandy, because of course you go through different things, and that’s what a relationship is."
In March of last year, Payne and Cole further solidified their connection to one another when they became parents to son Bear. "But we go through them together as a family and that’s the most important thing for me," he says. "This part of our relationship was never not going to happen, there was always going to be a little bit of tenseness in the way we sort ourselves out, but tell me a relationship in the world that doesn’t go through a spot like that?"
Payne adds, "It’s about whether you make it through or not, together, is the main point there I guess."
The One Direction member notes that one reason he and Cole are good together is that they both have experienced the ups and downs of the entertainment industry.
"[I’m] very fortunate that I partnered up with someone who’s very understanding with what I do, because I don’t think anybody else could take it," he says in praise of the former X Factor judge. "It’s difficult, obviously, having someone else who’s so high-profile in the media pushing everything that I do to another level, and I think it’s weird. I feel like the press are more obsessed with it than the nation are, which is quite funny.”
That being said, Payne continues, "It is about making it work for us, not making it work how people think it should work."
In an exclusive interview with ET last December, the "For You" singer shared how fatherhood has changed him.
"It's the first thing you think about in the morning and the last thing you think about at night," he gushed.
