King Charles III has sent a message of support to Donald Trump following the assassination attempt on the former president over the weekend.

Trump was rushed off stage at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday after shots rang out, grazing the presidential candidate and killing a bystander. The shooter was later identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was killed following the attack.

A source told ET on Monday that King Charles wrote privately to Trump following the shooting and the message was delivered via the British embassy in Washington D.C.

"The Palace does not divulge contents of such private correspondence, but the sentiments are in keeping with those communicated by the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer," the source added.

Starmer shared his message via social media on Saturday, writing, "I am appalled by the shocking scenes at President Trump's rally and we send him and his family our best wishes. Political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack."

Many other world leaders also spoke out following the assassination attempt on the former president, who will likely be the Republican nominee for president once again in the 2024 election.

President Joe Biden said, "There's no place in America for this kind of violence – or any violence. An assassination attempt is contrary to everything we stand for as a nation. It’s not America, and we cannot allow this to happen."

Trump's wife, Melania, also released a lengthy statement condemning the attack on her husband.

"America, the fabric of our gentle nation is tattered, but our courage and common sense must ascend and bring us back together as one," the former First Lady said in a statement shared on social media.

She said that when she watched the "violent bullet" strike her husband, she realized that her life and that of the couple's son Barron was "on the brink of devastating change."

"A monster who recognized my husband as an inhuman political machine attempted to ring out Donald's passion – his laughter, ingenuity, love of music and inspiration," Melania wrote. "This morning, ascend above the hate, the vitriol, and the simple-minded ideas that ignite violence."
