In the newest Descendants movie, Red (played by Kylie Cantrall of Gabby Duran & The Unsittables) is the daughter of the infamous Queen of Hearts (played by music artist Rita Ora). When Red is invited to the Auradon Prep, a school for the most famous heroes and villains, she looks forward to attending, but her mother has other plans. When Ora's character takes over the campus in a coup, Red and Cinderella's daughter (The Baby-Sitters Club's Malia Baker) go back in time to save the school. Accidentally going back too far, the duo finds out Red's mom was not always the villain she is now, but rather a pleasant and sweet student.
You don't need to watch the first three Descendants films to understand The Rise of Red, which some are calling Descendants 4, but the first movies do provide the back story about the events that are happening in the new movie, like why Wonderland residents are being invited to attend the academy for the first time in decades.
