The newest docuseries is being called unsettling yet wholly riveting. Read about the latest wild true-crime documentary series.

Tiger King's director, Eric Goode, has released a new docuseries called Chimp Crazy, and it's as bananas as you might expect.

The latest from the documentary filmmaker is a four-part series that examines the case of Tonia Haddix, a former nurse from Florida and self-proclaimed "Dolly Parton of Chimps," who spends her days caring for wild animals in captivity. It follows her run-ins with the animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and authorities. When a court rules that the chimps are to be removed from Haddix's care, all but one are retrieved. With the desperate search for Tonka, a famous chimp who appeared in the film Buddy with actor Alan Cumming, a chilling game of cat-and-mouse begins.

The first two episodes are streaming now.

With seven chimps in her care including Tonka, Haddix, an exotic animal broker, is the focus of the series, and other 'chimp moms' who form bonds with the chimps in their possession. Their fixation with the primates leads to neglect of the chimps' needs and even abuse and lies under oath as Haddix proclaims Tonka has died. The unsettling tale includes interviews with Cumming, who considers Tonka a "good friend" and offered a $10,000 reward to find the primate, matching a similar reward from PETA.

While exposing the mistreatment of animals is the director's goal, the series is an engrossing look into the complexities of human affection — and how far someone will go to 'protect' who they love.
