Fresh Ink: Celebrity Tattoos

Kat Von D is covering up her tattoos. The 41-year-old tattoo artist took to Instagram on Oct. 19, 2023 to reveal that she's 80 percent done "blacking out" her tattoos after undergoing 17 sessions over nearly 40 hours.

Von D shared a video of the process and answered several FAQs about it in the caption.

As for why she's opting to black out her tattoos rather than get them removed via laser, Von D wrote, "I actually did start lasering tattoos, and although I think laser tattoo removal is effective, I personally wasn’t a good candidate considering how much coverage I wanted to remove. Laser is a slow (and extremely painful) process, that depending on your tattoo, can take more than 10 sessions, including long healing periods in between."

The 21-year-old GRAMMY winner continues to expand her impressive tattoo collection. The singer took to Instagram on Oct.18, 2023 to share a series of photos, including one that revealed a striking tattoo stretching down the length of her entire back.

The new ink, executed by tattoo artist Matias Milan, features a mesmerizing line design that spans the length of Eilish's spine. Eilish didn't provide any insight into the meaning behind this intricate artwork, and she also remained tight-lipped about when exactly the tattoo was done. However, fans received a sneak peek of the top portion of this all-black tattoo in a post from Sept. 20, piquing their curiosity.

The "Sally Walker" rapper shared a video on Instagram showing off her new arm tattoo which she got in honor of her 23-month-old son Onyx Kelly, who she shares with ex Playboi Carti. 

"My new favorite & most special tattoo!" she captioned video, shared April 20. "It makes me sooo happy that this was executed by a talented woman. @luahillsart Thankyou again!"

The massive arm tattoo features a drawing of her baby boy as a cherub angel with the words "Onyx Orion" written across the baby's lower half on a cloth.

The Blink-182 drummer paid permanent tribute to late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins with a tattoo in his honor. Barker turned to famed tattoo artist Mark Mahoney, who inked a striking hawk, in flight, on Barker's ankle. The drummer shared some photos of the process to Instagram on April 13, 2022, which he captioned, "HAWK forever 🦅 Thank you @markmahoney_ssc"

The Red Table Talk co-host took to Instagram on March 2, 2022, to show off her new ink, which featured a delicate hand reaching up to a swirling galaxy, as the darkness of the cosmos transforms into mathematical equations. "My manzz <@rayjtattoo> did it AGAIN!! 🤯" Smith captioned the post of the impressive work of art.

The Cravings: Hungry for More author showed off her new, delicate elephant tattoo, located on her wrist, in an Instagram post on Jan. 31. “In my past life I was an elephant,” the caption, which was written out in Thai, read. In the photo, the tattoo -- which sticks out under the sleeve of a sweater -- shows the animal with his trunk up, which many believe is a sign of good luck.

The "Anyone" singer took to their Instagram Stories on Jan. 9 to share a look at the massive black spider tattoo they got inked on the side of their head by celebrity artist Dr. Woo. Posting a video from the session, Lovato showed off the new body art, shaving off a large chunk of their new buzzcut to place the spider right above their ear.

David Beckham's 19-year-old son debuted a wings-and-cross tattoo on the back of his neck in an Instagram post he shared on Jan. 6. The tattoo is reminiscent of the one his famous father has sported for years, and Romeo thanked renowned tattoo artist Doctor Woo for the incredible work.

The 23-year-old conservationist showed off her latest ink in a sweet slideshow post she shared to Instagram on Jan. 6. Bindi's first photo shows the new tattoo -- featuring the words "graceful warrior" and an alligator on her forearm -- as well as her baby girl, daughter, Grace Warrior, holding her hand. The second snap shows a ring of flowers around her wedding ring finger. "The words I spoke to our daughter as I held her for the first time in my arms were, 'My graceful warrior'. That’s how her name was born. This is my dad’s handwriting to keep him with me, always," Bindi shared of the inspiration for the art. "Our dear alligator, Daisy, is next to these words to represent our conservation work as Wildlife Warriors. And my beautiful wedding ring in bloom. Validation every day of the three most important things in my life: family, purpose and unconditional love. ❤️"

Following in each other's footsteps... literally! In honor of Delevingne's 28th birthday, Gerber posted a series of tributes to her Instagram Story. One included a photo of the pair's feet "hugging" and another pic of their feet showed that they each had "solemate" tattooed on their inner soles.

Talk about multitasking! The 25-year-old musician headed to the Beverly Hills, California, office of dentist Dr. Thomas Connelly in August 2020 to get diamonds applied to his teeth. He also got inked by Ganga -- during the same visit!  A source told ET that the “Sunflower” singer is taking extra precautions during the coronavirus pandemic, so he decided to undergo two treatments in one session inside a surgical room at Dr. Connelly’s office. Ganga shared a peek at the session on his tattoo studio’s Instagram account, posting a photo of the skull design being completed on Malone’s leg. “@postmalone thank you so much for your trust, the first time in the world that this is done!” the tattoo artist wrote. “In the operating room working hand in hand with @connellydds ❤️ more news soon!”

The 45-year-old actor paid tribute to his late friend Nick Cordero in a very special way. Braff got a stunning piece of new ink that shows Cordero, who died in July 2020 after a nearly 100-day battle with the coronavirus, dancing and singing while wearing a costume similar to one he sported in Bullets Over Broadway. Braff and Cordero met while starring in the show's Broadway production. Tattoo artist Dr. Woo shared an image of his work on Instagram, captioning his post, "In loving memory to the greatest ? @nickcordero1 on his friend @zachbraff ??❤️."

The Pretty Little Liars alum continues to amass the sweetest tattoo collection out there. On her lower left arm -- which already included a star and the word "Grammy," in honor of her grandmother -- an itty-bitty milkshake now graces her skin. Benson has more than a dozen tattoos -- in addition the aforementioned ones, the actress also has "California" written on her back, a piece of PLL ink and a cross on her wrist.

The "2002" singer showed off her new arm tattoo on Instagram in July 2020, explaining of the black outline of two interlocked hands, "Pinky promise things will stay the same. #ToBeYoung thank you @emilymalice ?????."

The "Señorita" singer has added a very personal piece of body art to his growing collection. In July 2020, Los Angeles-based tattoo artist Kane Navasard inscribed the name of Mendes' sister, Aaliyah Maria, in cursive just under the singer's left collarbone.

The Mad Max: Fury Road actress paid tribute to her late brother, Benjamin Keough. She had "Benjamin Storm" inked above her collarbone in cursive handwriting, showing off the new art via her Instagram Story in late July 2020. Benjamin was 27 when he died by suicide earlier in the month. The Keough siblings are the children of Lisa Marie Presley and grandchildren of Elvis Presley.

The English actor posted a video that showed him getting his newest piece of ink in July 2020 in honor of his late dog Mighty, who died after being missing for seven days in the Montecito area of California.

The comedian got his first tattoo at 55! He and 16-year-old daughter Zahra visited Bang Bang Tattoo in New York City on July 15. Both got Basquiat crowns on their shoulders, with Zahra adding a dinosaur under hers. "First tattoo for King @chrisrock and his wonderful daughter," Bang Bang Tattoo captioned close-up pic of the fresh ink. "Thank you for the trust." Zahra also shared videos and photos of the tattoo sessions on her Instagram Story. In one, she asked her dad how he liked it as the tattoo artist got to work, and Rock replied, "I mean, it's OK." 

The Friends alum famously has her late dog, Norman's, name inked on her foot, but in 2018, she also got an "11:11" drawn on her wrist. The meaning of the tattoo is unknown (though 11:11 is thought to be lucky, but it has been more visible as of late, namely when she has waved at awards shows like the 26th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in January 2020 and during her June 2020 virtual reunion with former co-star Lisa Kudrow.

The actress and her new wife, Miranda Pearman-Maday, both got delicate "PM" symbols -- the initials of their new combined last name -- inked on their ring fingers by celeb tattoo artist Winter Stone in June 2020. "@winterstone thanks for the corona solid!" Raven wrote on Instagram.

She's taking to Instagram quickly! When the Nashville star joined the 'gram in June 2020, she posted nearly a dozen photos to her page in just one day, including this black-and-white close-up of the "newish ink" on the back of her neck, the Eye of Ra. 

Already heavily covered in tattoos, the 22-year-old singer added another to her collection -- paws she inked on by herself during self-isolation. Jackson was already well inked after turning 18; she has a number dedicated to her late father, Michael Jackson, "Motley" inked inside her lower lip as well as a snake-and-dagger based off the cover art of Motley Crüe's Dr. Feelgood album, and chakra symbols down the center of her body.

The "We Are Warriors" singer forearms are both covered in tattoos. It was easy to see them in her music video for "Head Above Water," where the symbols on the right arm and phrases, knife and stars on her left could both be spotted as she swam underwater. 

The New Amsterdam star got twin tattoos on both biceps, with one reading "all the good" while the other says "all the bad. "Look. Tadooooooos. Amazing work by @_yinkk at @evilandlove tattoos In #brooklyn #tattoos #body #art #ink #inked #yinked @yink_tattoos," the Canadian actor captioned his shirtless Instagram pics on Feb. 28. "Thanks YING!! I’ll be back sooooooooon. ??❤️."

The "New Look" songstress added a tiny cross at the top of her left wrist, courtesy of celeb tattoo artist Winter Stone. He shared a pic of the single needle, fine line design on Feb. 17.

The "Anyone" singer took to Instagram on Feb. 11 to explain the powerful new tattoo she got a few weeks earlier in December 2019. At the time, her tattoo artist, Alessandro Capozzi described it as representing a “rebirth of the spirit,” and now Lovato is sharing her own explanation of the ink, which shows a fallen angel being held up by doves, alongside crumbling dark wings -- symbolizing “the darkness I was shedding.” “I recently went dark on social media in preparation for my Grammy and Super Bowl performances but while I was off socials I got this incredibly meaningful tattoo done by @alessandro_capozzi,” Lovato captioned two images, one showing her getting inked and one showing the stunning final artwork. “Getting tatted by him was an experience I’ve never had before.. no idea what I was going to get done, I told him about my life and where I was at in that moment and we created a combination on images that best symbolized the spiritual awakening I was having.”

“Having a fallen angel being lifted by 3, pure, angelic doves (the Holy trinity) as her inner light is being guided by a higher consciousness, and the disintegration of her dark wings was representing the darkness I was shedding,” continued the musician, who also got a neck tattoo reading, “Survivor” late last year. “Alessandro - you are extremely talented and I can’t wait for more!! Thank you for this special experience.. the only bummer is I can’t physically see this amazing artwork because it’s on my back! Haha. Also shout out to @scooterbraun for introducing us! ??? ps. Fresh off of a breakup from Austin Butler, Hudgens shared several sexy snaps on Jan. 23, including a topless photo of herself covering her chest as she showed off the new sunflower tattoo lining the left side of her chest. "And to conclude our #thirstythursday Hahahahaha ? @drag_ink @bangbangnyc," she captioned the pic. 

The "Lose You to Love Me" singer commemorated her new album, Rare, with a neck tattoo baring the same word, which was inked on her at Bang Bang Tattoo in New York City. Shortly after she got the simple script on Jan. 16, Gomez stood in the studio in a tie-dye sweatshirt as someone circled around her to get a look at the tat from every angle for video posterity.

The To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You actress honored her late grandmother with a new tattoo from Dr. Woo. ecently got a tattoo by to honor her late grandma and her nickname. “My grandma’s middle name was Moon. Her nickname, Moony," Parrish explained. "I miss her, but we are so grateful that we had her on this earth for 90 beautiful years. Thank you @_dr_woo_ for memorializing my beautiful grandma as she now is: shining down on us, forever Moony, always an anchor in my universe."

The NBA pro and his wife got matching geometric animal tattoos in honor of their kids, son Canon and daughters Riley and Ryan. "He luhhhhh matching my swag (***these are our babies signs we have for them)," Ayesha revealed on Instagram on Dec. 9. "Each has a deeper meaning and representation to us. Canon will always be our young wolf. Ryan our butterfly (this one makes me cry with joy just thinking about it) and Riley our horse (free spirited , which we turned into a unicorn because she’s our magical first born). Thank you again to @winterstone!!!"

The "Slide Away" singer got the word "freedom" written in script across her left fist courtesy of Winter Stone. The Beverly Hills-based tattoo artist posted photos of Cyrus' new body art on his Instagram account on Dec. 7, using the hashtag "#mothersdaughter" among others. The first line of the heavily tattooed songstress' recent single, "Mother's Daughter," just so happens to start with the line, "So don't f**k with my freedom." At the same sitting, she also had a handwritten note from Yoko Ono inked on her shoulder that reads, "'I'm proud of U. Yoko.'" Both were delicate, single needle pieces.

The 22-year-old singer got inked for the first time by Los Angeles artist Kane Navasard alongside her boyfriend, Shawn Mendes. Cabello's tattoo is on her pinky finger and reads, "It's a mystery" in cursive. The quote is from the 1998 movie Shakespeare in Love, starring Gwyneth Paltrow. Cabello shared a close-up of the tattoo to Instagram on Nov. 15 and quoted the film while sharing that the tattoo is also in honor of her mother, Sinuhe Estrabao. "'The natural condition is one of insurmountable obstacles on the road to imminent disaster.' 'So what do we do?' 'Nothing. Strangely enough, it all turns out well.' 'How?' 'I don’t know. It’s a mystery,'" she shared. "From one of my favorite movies of all time, Shakespeare in love ?. Never thought I’d get a tattoo before but I asked my mom to write to me a promise she'd want me to make to her that she thought i would need for the rest of my life, long story short, it’s a pinky swear to her to remember, no matter what happens, everything is gonna turn out well. There’s no telling how, but it always does ❤️."

What a sunshiny day! The Younger star got a solar-powered, single-needle addition to her tattoo collection. "Had a little sit with @winterstone today♥️ thank you for my ☀️ she’s a bright addition ?," Duff shared on Aug 7. The new piece is located on her right inner arm, just above her son, Luca's, name.

Celebrity tattoo artist Winter Stone gave Damon a very special new set of ink: all four of his daughter's names -- Alexia, Isabella, Gia and Stella -- written in lower-case script on his upper right arm. "FOR HIS KIDS... Honor tattooing one of my favorite actors!" Stone shared on Instagram on Aug. 5.

Less than a week after the musician suffered the tragic and sudden loss of his puppy, Waldo, he immortalized his canine companion with a tattoo of the Alaskan Klee Kai sweet, furry face on his right forearm. Jonas shared a snapshot of the fresh ink, which will serve as a permanent memorial to his beloved pup, to Instagram on July 29. "R.I.P. my little angel," Jonas, 29, captioned the pic of the heartfelt tattoo.

Cardi appears to have a new tattoo in honor of her husband, Offset. The Migos rapper took to Instagram on July 21 to share a screenshot of his video call with his wife, during which she held up her leg to reveal that she had inked Offset's name onto the back of her thigh. He placed a drooling face emoji on top of his face in the pic, then captioned the post, “CANT WAIT TO GET HOME ???.” The loved-up move comes after Offset previously had Cardi's name tattooed onto his neck.

The High School Musical alum honored her dog and "soulmate" Maui by getting her late "fur baby"'s name written on her arm, while husband Christopher French got a paw print inked onto his hand. The two were inked by tattoo artist Dragon at Bang Bang NYC in June 2019.

The Midnight Sun star added to her extensive tattoo collection with a right leg tat that read "Just Let Go," which was inked by Los Angeles-based artist Winter Stone. "Paint me like one of your American girls? Ps. Peep the leg tat ?," she wrote on Instagram on June 18. Thorne has quite a few more pieces, including a massive pair of angel wings on her back.

Her love for her fans will never be over! The 34-year-old pop star gave a group of KatyCats the surprise of a lifetime on May 29 when she invited them to a private fan experience hosted by Capitol Records at YouTube Space Los Angeles. The event kicked off with a sneak peek listen of Perry's new single, "Never Really Over," but there was an even bigger surprise in store for a lucky few -- they got inked! The "Swish Swish" singer proudly held up her right hand to show off the work, which is one half of a broken heart that reads "miss" inside it in script.

"Outside is a tattoo bus because in this video there's an incredible little symbol of a tattoo that was inspired by the director, Philippa Price," Perry explained at the event. "It was her personal story, and we did a little twist on it. It says 'Miss you' and hers says 'f**k you' and I respect that so much. So, we're going to get matching tattoos. Because to round it all out, this song is called 'Never Really Over' and with that, I truly believe that what we have will never ever really be over."

The power couple turned to celeb tattoo artist Winter Stone for their matching ink, which Teigen revealed via Instagram on April 4. "hey guys please don’t talk to us unless u have tattoos we are a cool tattoo family now and we only want to talk to other tattoo families (srry if this seems harsh)," the mom of two joked. "Thank you thank you @winterstone. You are not only incredibly talented but you are very kind and delightful and welcome over any time!!" The fine, scripted lines are dedicated to the pair's family, with Teigen's reading "John - Luna - Miles," while Legend's says "Chrissy - Luna - Miles." How sweet! Not only are her kids' names permanently inked on her, the Cravings cookbook author also got a tiny heart inked on her index finger during the sitting.

The Jersey Shore Family Vacation star has been working on her left sleeve for a while now, and she looked to have completed her inked arm thanks to a realistic portrait of her son, Greyson, added to the collection -- right on top of her hand! "When your dream artist gives you your dream tattoo @nikkohurtado ... my son forever on my hand ????," JWoww shared on Instagram on March 30.

Well, this tat may be a bit controversial. The DWTS alum got a tiny gun inked onto her right pointer finger, sharing the new ink via an Instagram shot of her puckering up in the car on March 11.

The *NSYNC singer was so inspired by his time on The Masked Singer that he got a colorful tat of his alter ego, The Rabbit, done by artist Zoey Taylor in Los Angeles on March 10.

NYC tattoo artist Ryan Mullins posted a photo of the 25-year-old comedian’s right arm, now covered by the image of a unicorn, as well as a photo of himself working away on the huge piece of artwork as the Saturday Night Live star waited patiently. “Unicorn ? on my dude Pete Davidson,” Mullins wrote of the black-and-white artwork on March 6, which is primarily the horse-like, one-horned animal’s face. Fans will remember that the TV star got a number of tattoos throughout his short-lived romance and engagement to Ariana Grande in 2018. Among them was the singer’s signature bunny-ears mask on his neck and the phrase “mille tendresse” (“a thousand tendernesses” in French, which is a Breakfast at Tiffany’s reference) to match Grande’s on the back of his neck. Those two in particular have since been covered up, with the latter replaced by the word “cursed.”

The 52-year-old actress took shared a snap of her massive tattoo, which runs along her spine. The leafy ink takes up the entirety of the middle of her back and grows in size as it travels down. Berry showed off her latest addition with a topless pic from behind, where she's sporting a sparkly skirt as she stands at the stovetop holding a pan, captioning the Instagram post, "Who says I’m not a mermaid ?‍♀️."

Mother Monster rang in Valentine's Day by adding two new tattoos to her ever-growing body art collection. She paid tribute to A Star Is Born by getting a delicate rose inked up her spine, with the petals along the stem reading "La Vie en Rose" in script. The single-needle tattoo is a reference to the first song Gaga sings as Ally in the remake, when Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) meets her for the first time. The New York City native also got a smaller piece on her arm, a series of musical notes that spell out "G-A-G-A."

One day after her fiance, Joe Jonas, shared a pic of the new ink she got from Winter Stone, the Game of Thrones star did the same. Her third tattoo from the Los Angeles-based artist was a small flame outlined in black ink on her ring finger. Last August, Stone tattooed a north star on her back.

The DNCE frontman got a second piece of ink from Winter Stone, adding lyrics from the ELO song "Mr. Blue Sky" in a spiral pattern on his arm, sharing a shot of the new addition to Instagram on Jan. 24. Last year, he got quite a few new pieces of body art, including a line drawing many think is dedicated to his fiancee, Sophie Turner, and matching Disney-themed tats with his lady love.

Though he was inked back in November, the tiny tat was too faint to read in photos of Bieber over the last few months. On Jan. 1, however, tattoo artist JonBoy shared on a close-up pic to Instagram, revealing that the "Sorry" singer had the word "grace" scrawled in script over his right eyebrow. JonBoy, who has previously worked with Bieber and his wife, Hailey Baldwin, as well as other celebs like Travis Scott and Kendall Jenner, appeared to just be admiring the tattoo, which was inked by fellow celeb tattoo artist Bang Bang and for which Baldwin has a counterpart. "They each got a tattoo,” Bang Bang previously told Page Six TV. “It’s really thin and delicate. And [it’s] also not a traditional couples’ tattoo... I don’t want to give away what it is until press gets a hold of it.”

The "thank u, next" singer capped off her roller coaster of a year with a new hand tattoo, drawn by Mira Mariah in New York City on Dec. 6. Grande shared quite a few Instagram Story videos from the outing, including her grandma getting a finger tattoo at the same time (how rad is that?!). The petite powerhouse's new black ink is line art depicting the sun and moon.

The Game of Thrones star marked the end of production on the HBO series with a new tattoo -- inking the back of her neck with the phrase "no one." in red letters, a call back to her character, Arya Stark's, training with the mysterious Faceless Men of Braavos.  

Not only did she make her red carpet debut with boyfriend Colin Jost at the Avengers: Infinity War premiere on April 23, Johansson also showed off the rose vine and deer tattoos on her back, thanks to her strapless sequined Erdem dress. 

When it comes to body art, Beckham appears to be trying to catch up to his heavily tatted-up dad, David Beckham! Already covered in a number of tattoos, the photographer/college student got another piece done by Mr. K of New York City's famed Bang Bang shop on April 22, this time a sword drawn along his right middle finger.

The War Dogs star took to Instagram to show off a new tattoo in celebration of sister Beanie Feldstein’s starring role opposite Bette Midler in the Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly! The tattoo, on Hill’s right forearm, reads “Hello, Beanie!” in the production’s signature font. Hill, 34, captioned the pic with the same text, tagging his younger sister and adding a red heart emoji. Feldstein, 24, who also recently starred alongside Saoirse Ronan in the Oscar-nominated film Lady Bird, played Minnie Fay in the acclaimed musical from its opening in April 2017 through January 2018.

The Justice League star was photographed on the beach in Hawaii in March 2018 while filming his newest movie, Triple Frontier, with his massive phoenix back tattoo on full display. The mythic tale of this unexpected tattoo dates all the way back to July of 2015 -- get its full history here.

The former soccer star added a tattoo to his growing collection of designs in July 2017 that was dedicated to his four children, sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz and daughter Harper. The neck ink was completed by Mark Mahoney at Los Angeles' Shamrock Social Club and read "dadda." 

After splitting from Tyga in 2017, the reality star changed a "t" on her ankle to read "la."  Jenner has a few other tattoos, including a red symbol on her inner left arm, a tiny heart on the back of her the same arm and the word "sanity" spelled out phonetically on her hip.

The Big Little Lies star's arm ink was on display while she was on-stage during HBO's presentation at the 2017 Winter TCAs in Pasadena, California.

The Texas native showed off the sunflower ink etched into her right leg at the Paris premiere of her movie, American Honey, in January 2017.

The former Dancing With the Stars champ showed off all of the body art on her arms while attending the 2017 Weinstein Company and Netflix Golden Globe after-party in a sleeveless white dress, including a close-up of the moon phases on her lower right hand.

After getting both "CLARITY" written in spaced-out letters on the left side of her neck and the initials MBR (for her brother, Miles Brockman Richie) on her right thumb, the 18-year-old model kicked off the new year by adding to her tiny tat collection. In January 2017, she had the letter "L" drawn onto her right ankle in cursive to pay homage to her father, Lionel Richie.

The "Habits" singer put her body art on display -- especially the one on her left arm of a girl sitting on a bumble bee -- while performing at 103.5 KISS FM's Jingle Ball 2016 concert in Rosemont, Illinois.

Someone's feeling catty! The model's latest tattoo -- inked on her lower lip by celebrity tattoo artist Jon Boy in September 2016 -- spells out "meow."

May the force be with him! The "Pillowtalk" singer debuted a mini lightsaber on the inside of his right middle finger in July 2016 that has a pretty unique feature: When you turn off the lights, it actually glows in the dark! Is this the coolest Star Wars tattoo ever? Quite possible.

The 31-year-old television personality revealed a new head tattoo in honor of the Orlando shooting victims. While Osbourne shared she had been wanting the tatt for a while, the Orlando massacre inspired her to make the jump.
