Click through our gallery to see who wound up regretting tattoos of lovers that turned into exes or matching ink with the people they are no longer in relationships with.
Ariel Winter
Just a few weeks into dating, the Modern Family star got a red heart tattoo inked on the side of her hand that lined up with boyfriend Levi Meaden's. The pair eventually moved in together but called it quits in 2019; they began dating in November 2016.
Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan
The pair called it quits in April 2018 after eight years of marriage, but they're forever linked with a line from their wedding vows. Back when the now-divorced Step Up stars tied the knot in July 2009, they decided to get matching tattoos. "Jenna and I have twin tattoos we got on our honeymoon in Bali," Channing revealed during his Sexiest Man Alive interview with People in 2012. "It says, 'Side by side.' Mine is here [points to rib cage], but hers is on her foot." He said at the time that it "was a joint decision." "We always wanted to get a tattoo of something together. We weren’t going to do each other's names. We wanted to do something symbolic. It was in one of our vows to each other. We took it from that," he added. Their tattoos aren't the only thing binding them together, however, as they also share daughter Everly.
Sarah Hyland
Although they had only been linked for a few weeks at the time, Hyland and her boyfriend, Vampire Academy actor Dominic Sherwood, got matching tattoos. The Modern Family star took to Instagram in March 2015 to show off her new ink, which was an arrow on her back, along with the caption, "What did I do this weekend? Got some ink with my best friends. 3♐️s." Though only her female friend was pictured in the collage, Sherwood took to his own Twitter account to show off his similar arrow tattoo, writing, "Evidence of last night’s escapades!!" The two called it quits in August 2017 after two years of dating, and Hyland has since gotten engaged to Wells Adams.
Ariana Grande
The "Thank U, Next" got quite a few tattoos with then-boyfriend Pete Davidson in the few months they were together, including the word "reborn" and the acronym "H2GKMO" on their thumbs and clouds on their fingers. They also had "8418" inked on each other, which was Davidson's father's badge number with the FDNY. Grande later had the numbers covered up with the name "Myron," which was a tribute to another important person to her, late ex-boyfriend, Mac Miller; Myron was the name of the dog the rapper adopted in 2017. She also had the "reborn" tattoo replaced with what looked like a feather or leaf. Grande, who called off her engagement with Davidson in October 2018, had previously covered up her "Pete" tattoo with a Band-Aid during her pre-taped performance in NBC's A Very Wicked Halloween musical TV special.
Pete Davidson
Just like his ex, the Saturday Night Live cast member also covered up the ink that reminded him of his former love. He turned the Grande-inspired bunny ears tattoo that on the side of his neck into a giant black heart alongside a lowercase "a."
That's not the only tattoo that Davidson got for an ex and later had to coverup. In an interview with the New York Post's Page Six in June 2018, Jon Mesa, co-owner of No Idols Tattoo Shop in New York City's Chinatown, recalled an instance when Davidson called about covering up some ink, including an image of his ex-girlfriend Cazzie David's face. It was then that the tattoo artist bestowed a few words of wisdom onto the comedian, who had recently started dating Grande. "I did a huge coverup [adding a forest of trees]," Mesa recalled. "After we were done, I told Pete, ‘Hey, dude, let’s just stop with the girlfriend tats until after [Grande’s] your wife."
Kylie Jenner
A permanent fix! The makeup mogul wanted the world to know when she called it quits with Tyga. When Jenner stepped out in London with new boyfriend Travis Scott in July 2017, the "t" on her ankle had been transformed into "la."
Amber Rose
The model turned a portrait of ex Wiz Khalifa into one of Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash. Rose and Khalifa split in 2014 and share one son, Sebastian.
Christina Aguilera
The pop star has ex-husband Jordan Bratman's initials inked on her lower back under the phrase "I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine" in Hebrew. Aguilera and Bratman split in 2011 and share one son, Max, who was born in 2008.
Jude Law
"You came along to turn on everything, Sexy Sadie," was the Beatles lyric that Law had tattooed in honor of ex-wife Sadie Frost. When the couple split in 2003, he had it covered up with a heart.
Kaley Cuoco
The Big Bang Theory star decided to get a back tattoo covered up that marked, in roman numerals, her December 2013 wedding date to Ryan Sweeting after the former couple split in September. She posted a picture of the process on Instagram, writing, "Thank you @nero_sct @studiocitytattoo for helping me right my wrongs.. ?? note to self- do not mark your body with any future wedding dates ? #under30mistakes #donttakeyourselftooseriouslykids." She also posted the finished cover-up, which is now a giant moth, writing, "The deep, meaningful, larger than life meaning behind this beautiful piece of ink, is..... It covered the last one."
Melanie Griffith
Griffith used to proudly show off the tattoo she got in the '90s while married to Antonio Banderas, but the pair split in December 2015 after nearly 20 years of marriage. Since then, she's been seen out with her heart ink slowly disappearing, and as of 2019, it was gone altogether.
Angelina Jolie
The brunette beauty had "Billy Bob" tattooed on her arm when she was with Billy Bob Thornton. After the split, she changed it to the longitudes and latitudes of the birthplaces of her six children.
Johnny Depp
The Pirates of the Caribbean star had a shoulder tattoo saying "Winona Forever" in honor of his former flame, Winona Ryder. He later changed it to say "Wino Forever."
Heidi Klum
The America's Got Talent judge had ex-husband Seal's initials on her arm along with the initials of her children, but she had his removed after their 2012 split.
Eva Longoria
Goodbye, No. 9! The Desperate Housewives star had the word "nine" tattooed on the back of her neck, representing the number on ex-husband Tony Parker's NBA jersey, as well as "07-07-07" to mark their wedding date on her wrist and Parker's initials elsewhere on her body. The two divorced in 2010 and after a couple of years, Longoria had all three removed. She is on cloud nine these days, however -- the actress-producer has been happily married to José Antonio Bastén since May 2016, and the pair welcomed son Santiago in June 2018.
Kat Von D
While dating Jesse James, the very inked celeb tattoo artist got her beau's fifth-grade school photo tattooed onto her rib cage. She revealed the new body art to James on her show, LA Ink, to which his first response was, "You're crazy." Despite the tattoo and their whirlwind engagement, the two called things off in the summer of 2011, and Von D began to get the portrait lasered off in late 2012 despite previously claiming she would keep it despite the split.
Marc Anthony
Lo siento, J.Lo ! The "I Need to Know" singer covered up his "Jennifer" wrist tattoo after he and ex-wife Jennifer Lopez parted ways in 2011. The pair share twins Max and Emme, and Lopez is now engaged to Alex Rodriguez.
Denise Richards
Richards had Charlie Sheen's first name tattooed on her ankle but covered it with a fairy tattoo after they broke up in 2006.
Charlie Sheen
Likewise, Sheen had his "Denise" ink lasered off of his wrist after their 2006 split.
Rob Kardashian
The Keeping Up With the Kardashian star had ex-girlfriend Adrienne Bailon tattooed on his ribcage. Now, the tattoo has reportedly been removed.
