Bradley Cooper and Zoe Saldana display their chemistry in The Words; Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a biker in search of a Premium Rush; Richard Gere must cover-up a serious transgression in Arbitrage and Spike Lee's controversial Red Hook Summer in this week's new releases.
Premium Rush
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
The Dark Knight Rises star Joseph Gordon-Levitt gets a Premium Rush of adrenaline in his action-packed new movie as Wilee, New York's best bicycle messenger. Agile and aggressive, he dodges speeding cars, crazed cabbies and eight million cranky pedestrians on a daily basis. But when his last envelope of the day -- a routine "premium rush" run -- turns out to be one that people would kill for, his delivery becomes a life-or-death chase through the streets of Manhattan. Directed by David Koepp (Secret Window, Stir of Echoes), the film also stars Michael Shannon, Dania Ramirez and Jamie Chung.
The Words
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Bradley Cooper gets serious as an ambitious writer who passes off someone else's work as his own in this romantic drama. The Words casts Bradley as Rory Jansen, a struggling writer who finally achieves literary success after publishing what is called The Next Great American Novel. The only catch? He didn't write it. When the original author surfaces (Jeremy Irons), Jansen is forced to confront his choices and decide whether it's more important to keep up the lie or come clean. The Words also stars Zoe Saldana, Dennis Quaid, Ben Barnes and Olivia Wilde.
Red Hook Summer
Image Entertainment
Spike Lee returns to his Brooklyn stomping grounds with this controversial indie movie that follows the story of Flik Royale (Jules Brown), a precocious, middle-class boy from Atlanta who spends the summer with his deeply religious grandfather, Bishop Enoch Rouse (Treme star Clarke Peters), in the New York borough's Red Hook housing projects. Despite getting off on the wrong foot with the preachy relative and dealing with culture shock, Flik learns to appreciate his surroundings, especially when he meets the pretty Chazz Morningstar (Toni Lysaith).
Arbitrage
Lionsgate
Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon star opposite sultry Laetitia Casta in the suspense thriller Arbitrage, which casts Gere as a wealthy hedge fund manager who desperately tries to cover up a personal transgression. Can he behave as if nothing happened as he completes the sale of his trading empire -- before his fraud can be uncovered?
