The Master
The Weinstein Company
Release Date: September 14
The Plot: Set in the 1950s, Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a charismatic intellectual known as "The Master" who launches his own religion, a character reportedly based on Scientology creator L. Ron Hubbard. Joaquin Phoenix plays a World War II vet and drifter who becomes Hoffman's "inspiration" and right-hand man. Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons and David Warshovsky also star. "I am a writer, a doctor, a nuclear physicist, a theoretical philosopher," says Hoffman's character to Phoenix. "But, above all, I am a man. Hopelessly inquisitive man, just like you."
Why It's a Must-See: Paul Thomas Anderson's follow-up to There Will Be Blood is arguably the most highly anticipated film of the fall, generating controversy before even a frame was seen by the public due to its parallels to the rise of Scientology, cracking open the Pandora's Box of the cult-like religion. The film was screened for Anderson's Magnolia star (and well-known Scientologist) Tom Cruise, who reportedly had a bone to pick with select elements of the film. Anderson proclaimed, "We are still friends. I showed him the film, and the rest is between us."

Looper
TriStar Pictures
Release Date: September 28
The Plot: Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a time-traveling hit man tasked with taking out the older version of himself -- played by Bruce Willis -- in this futuristic thriller. In the Looper world, time travel is illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they send their target 30 years into the past, where a "looper" -- a hired gun, like Joe (Gordon-Levitt) -- is waiting to mop up. Joe lives the good life with his job as a looper – until one day the mob decides to "close the loop," sending back Joe's future self (Willis) for assassination. Will he kill himself, or team up to get revenge? Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Looper also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano and Jeff Daniels.
Why It's a Must-See: Joseph Gordon-Levitt's "It" factor continues to rise after pivotal roles in Inception and The Dark Knight Rises, and Looper looks to be a clever, thinking person's sci-fi actioner. "It's more Chris Nolan than Michael Bay," Joe tells ET. "If you like a fun time and a bangin'-ass movie, you'll get that. If you also like a more grown-up drama, you'll also get that. It's one of those movies."

Frankenweenie
Walt Disney Pictures
Release Date: October 5
The Plot: Tim Burton brings his signature style to this stop-motion animated tale about a young boy, Victor Frankenstein (voiced by Charlie Tahan), who unexpectedly loses his dog Sparky. Determined to bring him back to life, he sets up a laboratory in his attic and manages to stitch him up and reanimate the beloved creature. But when Sparky gets loose, the entire town learns that getting a new "leash" on life can be monstrous. Burton favorites Winona Ryder, Martin Landau and Catherine O'Hara also lend their voices to the project, and once again, Danny Elfman is on hand to provide the score.
Why It's a Must-See: Frankenweenie was one of Burton's first films, a half-hour, live-action short made in 1984 about a boy who revives his beloved best friend in true Frankenstein style. Now, in the spirit of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride (and just in time for Halloween), Burton has returned to his "pet" project with this feature-length, stop-motion version of the movie in classic black and white. Hopefully this misunderstood outcast "tail" captures the warmth and humanity of Burton's best (like the beloved Edward Scissorhands) as opposed to some of his recent, arguably soulless, remakes such as Dark Shadows, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Planet of the Apes.

Argo
Warner Bros.
Release Date: October 12
The Plot: On November 4, 1979, Iranian militants stormed the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 52 Americans hostage. Now, the unbelievable true story behind the covert operation to rescue six U.S. citizens who managed to evade capture is coming to the big screen. Ben Affleck directs and also stars as a CIA "exfiltration" specialist who comes up with an audacious plan to get the six Americans safely out of the country: devise a fake Hollywood sci-fi movie called Argo as a cover to allow a rescue team in behind enemy lines to pull it off. Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Kyle Chandler and Kerry Bishe also star.
Why It's a Must-See: Taken from declassified government files about the real-life hostage crisis that consumed headlines at the end of the turbulent '70s, this true tale was so unbelievable it can only be chalked up as "truth is stranger than fiction." Ben Affleck has reinvented himself as an A-list director after solid critical acclaim for Gone Baby Gone and The Town, and this large-scale period piece is his most ambitious film to date. Can he hit this one out of the park? We think so, with a possible Oscar nom to boot.

Killing Them Softly
The Weinstein Company
Release Date: October 19
The Plot: In this gritty new mob thriller starring Brad Pitt, a couple of not-too-bright guys (Scoot McNairy and Ben Mendelsohn) decide to rob a Mafia-protected card game, causing the local criminal economy to collapse. Brad plays the enforcer hired to track them down and restore order. The film also stars Richard Jenkins, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta and Sam Shepard.
Why It's a Must-See: Nope, it's not a cover of the Roberta Flack song by way of the Fugees by way of Brad Pitt (that would be Killing Me Softly, not Killing Them Softly). Based on the George V. Higgins novel Cogan's Trade, the project re-teams Brad with his The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford director Andrew Dominik. The film looks to tap into the humanity of the less-than-savory protagonists with a taste of author Elmore Leonard's sense of humor among the criminal trade for good measure. Let's just hope the pacing is less sleepy than Jesse James.

Cloud Atlas
Warner Bros.
Release Date: October 26
The Plot: Based on the complex David Mitchell novel, Cloud Atlas tells six stories, each set in a different time and place -- from the 19th century South Pacific to a post-apocalyptic world -- which become intricately related to each other. Tom Hanks, Halle Berry and Hugh Grant each play six roles in the saga that also features Susan Sarandon, Jim Broadbent and Hugo Weaving.
Why It's a Must-See: After stumbling out of the gate post-Matrix with the oil-slicked Speed Racer, The Wachowskis have teamed up with Run Lola Run director Tom Tywker for this extremely ambitious spectacle which could either buckle under its own weight or be one of the best films of the decade. Among his roles, Hugh Grant singles out his favorite as the owner of Korean Replicant slave girls serving in a fast food restaurant a few thousand years in the future. "My job is to corral them and abuse them," he says, calling the project "the strangest film, strangest script, strangest offer I ever had."

Flight
Paramount
Release Date: November 2
The Plot: Denzel Washington plays a commercial airline pilot whose heroism puts him under intense scrutiny in the new thriller from director Robert Zemecki. Denzel plays Whip Whitaker, a seasoned flyer who miraculously crash-lands his plane after a mid-air catastrophe, saving nearly every soul on board. After the incident, Whip is hailed as a hero, but as more is learned, more questions than answers arise as to who or what was really at fault. What really happened on that plane? John Goodman, Don Cheadle and Melissa Leo also star.
Why It's a Must-See: Curiously described as an "action-packed mystery thriller," Flight marks director Robert Zemeckis' welcome return to live-action drama after over a decade of experimenting with motion-capture technology in films ranging from The Polar Express to Beowulf and Mars Needs Moms. Zemeckis proved to be remarkably adept at depicting the intensity of a plane crash in Cast Away, and with the powerfully nuanced Denzel at the yoke, Flight could prove to be the director's most memorable film in years.

This Must Be the Place
The Weinstein Company
Release Date: November 2
The Plot: Sean Penn plays Cheyenne, a wealthy, middle-aged, Robert Smith-styled rock star who becomes bored in retirement and chooses to track down his late father's tormentor at Auschwitz, a Nazi war criminal who is hiding out in the United States. Frances McDormand, Judd Hirsch, Harry Dean Stanton also star in addition to Talking Heads frontman David Byrne as himself (whose song provides the film's title).
Why It's a Must-See: On the surface, This Must be the Place looks like a dark comedy, but the road trip film is respectfully frank in its treatment of Holocaust subject matter. At heart a story of an estranged father and his rebellious son who must learn to grow up, the film boasts one of Sean Penn's bravest – and most amusing -- performances in years.

Skyfall
Sony Pictures
Release Date: November 9
The Plot: Daniel Craig is coiled like a snake in his third outing as James Bond in Skyfall, which finds 007's loyalty to M (Judi Dench) tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost. "Some men are going to kill us. We're going to kill them first," says the infamous double agent. Oscar winner Sam Mendes (who directed Craig in Road to Perdition) helms Skyfall, which also stars Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney, Bond girls Naomie Harris and Berenice Marlohe, and Javier Bardem as the vengeful villain, Silva, looking to take down M and MI6.
Why It's a Must-See: Not only does Skyfall find 007 defending the crown on his home turf of England – as well as traveling to exotic Shanghai and Istanbul -- from the looks of the lush cinematography, the 23rd film in the franchise could rank as one of the most beautifully photographed, cinematic Bond films yet. Given its pedigree and incredible trailer, could this be the first 007 flick to be nominated for Best Picture?

Lincoln
Dreamworks
Release Date: November 9
The Plot: Daniel Day-Lewis transforms into our 16th president in Steven Spielberg's historical drama, which focuses on the last four months of Abraham Lincoln's life and the political strategizing he undertook at the close of the Civil War to ensure that slavery would be forever outlawed. The film also stars David Strathairn as Lincolns loyal Secretary of State, William Seward; Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Gulliver McGrath as Lincolns sons, Robert and Tad; Sally Field as his wife Mary Todd Lincoln; and Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens, a radical member of Lincolns own party.
Why It's a Must-See: A long-in-the-works project that at one point had Liam Neeson as the lead, Day-Lewis nonetheless appears to be perfectly cast as Honest Abe – and a dead ringer too – which may explain in part why Spielberg addressed the method actor as "Mr. President" on set. "Our movie is really about a working leader who must make tough decisions and get things done in the face of overwhelming opposition," says Spielberg. "Lincoln had a very, very complicated -- and at the same time, extremely clear -- inner life."

The Silver Linings Playbook
The Weinstein Company
Release Date: November 21
The Plot: Bradley Cooper plays Pat Solatano, a grown man living with his mother (Jacki Weaver) and father (Robert De Niro) after losing his house, job and wife -- and spending eight months in a state institution on a plea bargain. Determined to rebuild his life and reunite with his wife, Pat meets a mysterious girl named Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) who has her own set of issues. She offers to help him reconnect with his wife if he'll do something very important for her in return, and as their deal plays out, silver linings begin to appear in their lives.
Why It's a Must-See: Red-hot off The Hunger Games, Lawrence gets to show off her acting chops without having to run for her life, and here she demonstrates a decided chemistry with Cooper, himself trading in his Hangover humor for a more complicated role that reunites him with his Limitless co-star De Niro. Director David O. Russell (The Fighter, Flirting with Disaster) can be hit and miss when it comes to offbeat humor, but this one looks like a move right out of the Indie Spirit Awards playbook.

Life of Pi
20th Century Fox
Release Date: November 21
The Plot: This ambitious adaptation of the bestselling novel stars Suraj Sharma as Pi Patel, the son of an Indian zookeeper who seeks refuge on a lifeboat after his freighter sinks, adrift alone in the Pacific in tight quarters with a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Half-delusional with thirst and hunger, how can Pi survive his epic journey? Tobey Maguire also stars as Yann Martel, the writer interviewing him; Gerard Depardieu plays The Chef, Tabu plays Pi's mother; and Irrfan Khan plays the adult Pi.
Why It's a Must-See: The adaptation of Life of Pi has sailed some choppy seas to make it to the big screen, but audiences will finally get to see the philosophical survival/adventure tale courtesy of Oscar-winning director Ang Lee. Directors M. Night Shyamalan, Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Alfonso Cuaron were all involved with the adaptation of the Yann Martel bestseller at one point or another, but in Lee's capable hands, the arguably unfilmable narrative looks to be coherent, engrossing and visually impressive.

The Twilight Saga - Breaking Dawn: Part 2
Summit Entertainment
Release Date: November 16
The Plot: In the final chapter of The Twilight Saga, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) must learn to control her urges as a bloodthirsty vampire while becoming a protective mother to daughter Renesemee (played by 11-year-old Mackenzie Foy) with sparkly vamp dad Edward Cullen. But the ruling Volturi mistakenly believe that the couple's spawn was born human and then turned into a bloodsucker – a violation of their law – prompting the Cullen clan to circle the wagons and prove their case. Oh, and Taylor Lautner takes off his shirt.
Why It's a Must-See: For die-hard Twi-hards, it's all been leading up to this. The third act, too, strays from author Stephenie Meyer's original climax, which now promises a serious shock to the Twilight world. For the haters, Breaking Dawn: Part 2 is a cause for celebration to wave "adieu" and mutter, "good riddance."
