E.T. and Elliott are back together again, 37 years after E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial debuted in theaters.
The pair reunite in a new commercial for Xfinity, which hits us right in the feels. The nostalgic commercial premiered during Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday, and offers several nods to Steven Spielberg's 1982 film.
The commercial begins with Elliott's (Henry Thomas) kids discovering E.T. behind a snowman, before their dad excitedly runs outside and comes face-to-face with his old friend. E.T. spends time with Elliott's family (including his son, who wears similar pajamas to the ones Elliott wore in the movie), eats some Reese's Pieces, and eventually realizes that he needs to go home to his own family. He rides off on his bike, with Elliott watching him fly away.
"The audience is going to get everything they want out of a sequel without the messy bits that could destroy the beauty of the original and the special place it has in people's minds and hearts. It’s really a win-win," Thomas said in a statement on Thursday.
"Looking at the storyboards, I could see exactly why Steven [Spielberg] was really behind it, because the integrity of the story isn’t lost in this retelling," he added.
E.T. was the biggest blockbuster and top-earning film of the 1980s. It won two Academy Awards, for Best Original Score and Best Visual Effects. See more on the film in the video below.
