The singer broke the news to his Twitter followers on Monday morning.
Elton John had some sad news to share with his Twitter followers.
On Monday morning, the 70-year-old singer tweeted that his mother, Sheila Farebrother, had died at 92. "So sad to say that my mother passed away this morning. I only saw her last Monday and I am in shock," he tweeted. "Travel safe Mum. Thank you for everything. I will miss you so much. Love, Elton."
John also posted a photo of himself and his mom from June 2003, when they attended the Fifth Annual White Tie and Tiara Ball to benefit his foundation.
The five-time GRAMMY winner performed in Barcelona, Spain, on Sunday night, and has several performances lined up for the month. He has yet to announce if he'll be postponing any of these appearances in light of his mother's death.
While there were reports that John and his mom had fallen out of touch in recent years, the "Rocket Man" musician did wish her a Happy Mother's Day in May. "Dear Mum, Happy Mother's Day! So happy we are back in touch. Love,
Elton," he wrote.
ET recently spoke with John about his legacy in both music and philanthropy. Check out the exclusive interview:
