David Foster Reacts to His 3-Year-Old Son Rennie Drumming and Making Kennedy Center Debut With Him (Exclusive)

Foster and Katharine McPhee's 3-year-old son made his stage debut at the Kennedy Center in February.

David Foster and Katharine McPhee's son, Rennie, has the music in him!

In February, the pair's 3-year-old son joined Foster onstage during his and McPhee's An Intimate Evening show at Washington, D.C.'s historic Kennedy Center. Little Rennie's parents often share his talents via social media, but that was the first moment his skills were center stage as he performed alongside his father and singer Daniel Emmet.

According to Foster, he and Rennie shared the milestone together, as it was also his first time performing in the iconic arts venue.

"Well, we both did it kind of for the first time together," Foster told ET's Deidre Behar during the10th Breakthrough Prize Awards on Saturday. "I've never been there before either."

Foster -- who has been a top producer in music since the '70s -- admitted that he and McPhee are going to encourage Rennie's time onstage, "moderately," as they are not interested in pushing him to follow in their footsteps.

"He's probably going to be a lawyer or something, not a drummer," Foster said. "But we love it and we're having fun with it. Everybody’s child is special, so our child is special to us and he seems to have this talent. So we're just going to go along for the ride without pushing him too hard."

Foster and McPhee, who have been married since 2019, have been traveling together with Rennie for their latest trip across the globe in support of their current tour -- which is headed to Asia.

The pair will mark their five-year wedding anniversary on the road. The GRAMMY-winning composer shared that after that leg of the tour, the couple will scale back their performances together.

"We've been on the road a lot together lately," he shared. "And we're maybe going to shut it down a little bit after this year. It's hard. The hour and a half on stage is amazing, but the 22 and a half hours around it, is tough."

While he was without his "magical" wife during the event on Saturday, which recognizes scientific achievement and brings together luminaries of science and mathematics with leading figures from the worlds of entertainment, the "Never Enough" singer was happy to attend and represent the music.

"I'm friends with the people that do the Breakthrough Prize, and it's such a brilliant, brilliant thing to do and something we can call our own here in America," he told ET. "It's such great work rewarding these scientists and then to be able to help with the music is just a bonus for me. This is like what I do. So that part's easy."
