The actress is nominated twice for her work in the Harriet Tubman biopic, 'Harriet.'
Cynthia Erivo is no stranger to accolades ever since delivering her Tony Award-winning performance in The Color Purple. In the years that followed, she’s become one Oscar away from an EGOT. Now, thanks to her starring role as Harriet Tubman in the groundbreaking biopic, Harriet, the 32-year-old actress is earning more attention than ever.
On Monday, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the full list of nominees for the 2020 Golden Globe Awards, with Harriet earning a total of two for Erivo’s contributions to the film. She earned one for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture -- Drama and another for Best Original Song, for co-writing and singing “Stand Up.” Both mark her first Golden Globe nominations ever.
“Bringing Harriet Tubman to life for the first time on the big screen has meant the world to me, and to do so with an incredibly talented and diverse group of filmmakers has been an absolute honor. To be nominated for both my performance and the song I had the privilege to co-write for the film is a testament to Harriet's enduring legacy and a celebration of her incredible story, which is long overdue,” Erivo said in a statement to ET.
“I am grateful to the HFPA for this recognition and feel truly blessed and humbled to be included on a list of such incredible artists. To say that this is overwhelming and a dream come true is putting it lightly. I'm excited to attend my first Golden Globe awards, and to share the night with friends and people I love is icing on the cake. This is beyond my wildest dreams.”
On social media, she later tweeted, “Unbelievably grateful, endlessly humbled.” On Instagram, she added, “This is awesome!!!”
As to why Erivo’s dual performances are earning her all this attention and accolades, director Kasi Lemmons puts it simply: “She’s as good as any actress who has ever played anything.”
And when asked about what it means to be part of the 2020 awards season, which may eventually take her to the Oscars, Erivo previously told ET that “it feels a bit like a dream... And to be here now is amazing.”
