Christina Aguilera and Drew Barrymore Talk Daughters Challenging Them After Their 'Playboy' and Chaps Pasts

The singer and talk show host both describe themselves as 'protective' parents.

Christina Aguilera and Drew Barrymore candidly discuss raising daughters after having their own wild pasts.

On Tuesday's episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the talk show host sits down with the singer at the location of her Las Vegas residency. The two moms open up about the challenges of raising daughters, knowing that their histories are out there for their kids to find.

"My daughter wants to wear a crop top, I'll say, 'No' and she'll go, 'You were on the cover of Playboy,'" Barrymore quips.

Barrymore shares daughters Olive, 11, and Frankie, 9, with her ex-husband, Will Kopelman. The child star-turned-actress posed on a 1995 issue of the magazine.

"I love that she said that though," Aguilera says of Barrymore's daughter. "I knew it was coming the day I wore chaps. I was like, 'One day, I know I’m going to be like…' because my daughter wants to wear a crop top too. And I am just like, 'Can we just pull it down?' I see myself doing that."

For the 43-year-old "Dirrty" singer, she says her concerns with what her 9-year-old daughter, Summer Rain, wears have to do with fears for her safety.

"I think I always try to instill in her that certain people out there have good intentions and bad intentions," Aguilera explains. "I don’t want to scare her in one way and be terrified of the world that everybody is a bad person because they are not. But also I think it's important for her to have a strong sense of self but also to be very empowered with her body, eventually will be her sexuality. So I want her to just really know herself first."

Defending her and Barrymore's past decisions, she adds, "Kind of musically, also even when you take it back to chaps or even you on Playboy, we were expressing ourselves and how we felt was best for us, I think at the time, and was empowering."

The talk show host says of that time period, "I loved every minute of it."

"We didn’t do it for someone else and then there are so many labels and judgments, 'Oh you are doing it for a guy,'" Aguilera muses. "No, you’re making it about that narrative in your own head. That has nothing to do. It’s empowering being a female and embracing your body, and everything that makes you feel good or womanly. However, that is for yourself to be able to embrace that."

As for her parenting style, Aguilera refers to herself as a "helicopter mom," adding, "I'm so protective." Barrymore says she can relate.

In addition to Summer, whom she shares with fiancé Matt Rutler, Aguilera is also mom to son Max, 15, with her ex-husband, Jordan Bratman.
