The famed designer and longtime Cher collaborator will help the musical embody the singer at different stages of her career.
The Cher Show, the new musical based on the life and career of the iconic performer, will bring the glitz and the glam to Broadway, thanks to Bob Mackie.
The famed American designer and longtime Cher collaborator joins the show’s creative team as costumer designer. Mackie is responsible for some of the singer’s most iconic looks, including her 1986 showgirl-inspired Oscars dress.
Offering a first glimpse of what’s to come when the show opens at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York City this fall, Mackie shared a lithograph sketch he designed of the three Chers in costume.
Before its Broadway debut, The Cher Show will premiere with a limited engagement at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre on June 12. The new “bio-musical” will feature a book by Tony Award winner Rick Elice (Jersey Boys), choreography by Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli (Newsies), and orchestrations, arrangements and musical supervision by Tony Award winner Daryl Waters (Memphis). Jason Moore, the Tony-nominated director of Avenue Q and Pitch Perfect, will direct. In addition to Mackie, the rest of the design team includes Tony Award winning set designer Christine Jones (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child), set designer Brett Banakis (The Glass Menagerie), Tony Award winning lighting designer Kevin Adams (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) and sound designer Nevin Steinberg (Hamilton).
“My life as a musical on Broadway. It seems crazy, exciting and bizarre -- but that's probably how my life seems to most people,” Cher said in a statement when the show was first announced.
