The upcoming season is being described as being about "our collective unease with the modern world."
The trailer for the fifth season of Black Mirror is here, and it might have fans putting aside their technological devices after viewing.
The snippets from the upcoming episodes, which will premiere on Wednesday, June 5, on Netflix, star Miley Cyrus, Anthony Mackie, Topher Grace, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Damson Idris, Andrew Scott, Nicole Beharie, Pom Klementieff, Angourie Rice, Madison Davenport and Ludi Lin.
In the trailer, Cyrus almost appears to be playing herself as it's revealed that her pop star-like character is performing in front of 20,000 fans. Other story lines include a lonely teenage girl whose only friend is her Siri-like robot doll, and a man with a gun who appears to be having a breakdown over everyone being on their phones all the time. As for Mackie's character, he is bored with family life and resorting to looking at women online.
At one point in the trailer, the words love, privacy, sex, work and afterlife flash across the screen, leaving many fans to speculate about how the afterlife will play into these three episodes.
Netflix has described this season as showing "our collective unease with the modern world, with each stand-alone episode a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia leading to an unforgettable -- and sometimes unsettling -- conclusion."
The statement continues, "Without questioning it, technology has transformed all aspects of our lives; in every home; on every desk; in every palm -- a plasma screen; a monitor; a Smartphone -- a Black Mirror reflecting our 21st Century existence back at us."
