The 'Saltburn' actor revealed the scary health incident that occurred prior to a major career event.
Barry Keoghan revealed that he had quite the setback prior to his Oscar-nominated role in The Banshees of Inisherin.
In the latest issue of GQ, the Satlburn actor shared that he battled a case of necrotizing fasciitis, which is a flesh-eating disease.
According to the CDC, necrotizing fasciitis is a rare bacterial infection that spreads quickly in the body and can cause death. Accurate diagnosis, rapid antibiotic treatment, and prompt surgery are important to stopping this infection."
During the interview, Keoghan removes his shirt and exposes a scar that goes up his arm. The 31-year-old Irishman shares that he remembers asking the doctors if he was going to die, and the doctor telling him, "I don't know."
However, Banshees director Martin McDonagh recalls visiting Keoghan in the hospital, and how the star didn't let the uncertainty of amputation or death discourage him from wanting to work.
"I'm not sure if he was on a lot of meds, but he seemed to shrug it off," McDonagh tells the magazine. "We were only about four days out from shooting, and his arm was puffed up. But he was like, 'Yeah, no, I’m going to be fine -- I’ll see you on Tuesday.' I went to the hospital thinking, S**t is he going to die? Let alone, is he going to make the movie. But I came out of there energized and looking forward to it."
Keoghan says that he remembers the heart monitors in the hospital room beeping and McDonagh telling him to remember this moment when he is nominated for an Oscar.
Keoghan fully recovered and was nominated for his role as Dominic in the film at last year's Academy Awards.
The Irish actor is no stranger to having major life events take place prior to taking on a buzzworthy role.
Keoghan revealed that his son, Brando -- whom he shares with his ex, Alyson Sandro -- was born right in the middle of Saltburn's production.
"They gave me a day off," he says about the day his 15-month-old son was born. "Good on them! Day off, and straight on to night shoots and night feedings -- boom!"
He adds, "It was probably the best time of my life, to be quite fair. Havin' a baby boy, and leadin' a movie. It was the best time of my life, I must say -- yeah."
