The 'Twins' stars reunited for a State Farm Insurance commercial that aired during Super Bowl LVIII.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito are proving yet again they're one dynamic duo, this time teaming up for a State Farm commercial that aired during the Super Bowl. They're also not exactly ruling out a Twins sequel!
Speaking to ET's Cassie DiLaura over Zoom before the airing of their State Farm commercial, Schwarzenegger and DeVito shared what brought them together to star in a commercial. DeVito, of course, is currently the face and star of those hilarious "Sub Above" Jersey Mike's commercials. But getting Schwarzenegger to take part in a commercial came with caveats, one of which DeVito fulfilled with his mere involvement.
"Danny is definitely one of the reasons why I was looking forward to doing this commercial," Schwarzenegger said. "Also, to me, what is important is always that it is organic."
The former governor of California added that he gets offered "a lot of commercials" but authenticity plays a key role in his decision-making.
"It has to be totally believable. To me, this one was good because I come from public service and I come from the background of always trying to do something for my neighborhood and for my city, for my state, for my country," said Schwarzenegger, who in April 2023 famously filled potholes in his Los Angeles neighborhood after weeks of neighbors complaining about it.
"It's always about protecting the neighborhood, being a good neighbor and having a positive impact on the neighborhood," he added, "and State Farm is known for that."
DeVito couldn't agree more.
"I do admire what State Farm does, and it's so good," he said. "And I dig their commercials and I dig the fact that they can bring Arnold and I back together again. It's good, plus the writing was good. I thought that the script was really funny. The fact that he was letting them hit him on the accent was really charming and I thought really a nice thing."
DeVito was starring on Broadway in I Need That when the call came to do the commercial.
"I traveled across the country to come do it because I was doing my play in New York and I jumped at the chance to do it because I'm always there for Arnold," DeVito said. "And he's always there for me, and those State Farm [commercials] fits into that category well."
DeVito, 79, and Schwarzenegger, 76, met well before filming the 1988 buddy comedy Twins, the film about unlikely fraternal twin brothers who were separated at birth but reunite in Los Angeles. As DeVito tells it, he was in New York when Schwarzenegger spotted him and helped him with his bags. They were instantly friends. They would later take the world by storm with the Ivan Reitman-directed comedy. Ever since its success there's been constant talk about a sequel.
The plans were seemingly in motion over the last few years, but tragically Reitman died in February 2022. DeVito told ET that if there's going to be a Twins sequel, it has to involve him and Schwarzenegger, but not having Reitman for the second go-around will always be heartbreaking.
"When we lost Ivan, rest his soul, we were about to work with him again on a sequel for Twins," DeVito said. "I think where my head is -- and I think Arnold's in the same spot -- we want to work together. We want to do another movie together, whether it's a sequel or a new element that's another story. Just has to be good, funny, entertaining for us that fits with our characters, and what people want to see. And that's what we're aiming for."
Whether it's a Twins sequel or something, there's no denying the duo has palpable chemistry.
"As far as I'm concerned, it's a chemistry and you cannot make that up with acting or anything like that," Schwarzenegger says. "It is the number one most important thing -- you've got to like each other, respect each other and you just click. When we did Twins we recognized when we did the first few scenes how much fun we were together and how Danny plays off me and I play off Danny. It's just a match made in heaven, really."
