Kelly Clarkson's 'Breakaway' was prominently featured in 2004's 'The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement' starring Anne Hathaway.
Please let this be a confirmation for a Kelly Clarkson original song in The Princess Diaries 3!
On Wednesday, Anne Hathaway celebrated the 20th anniversary of The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement and Clarkson's "Breakaway," which was on the movie's soundtrack.
"Happy 20th anniversary to #PrincessDiaries2 and @kellyclarkson's Breakaway!" the 41-year-old actress captioned her Instagram tribute.
Hathaway shared a clip of the "Breakaway" music video, in which Clarkson poses for the cameras on the red carpet of the world premiere of The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement before going into a movie theater to watch the film. Hathaway then shared a series of throwback photos from her time filming, featuring former co-stars Chris Pine and Julie Andrews.
Comments were flooded with fans begging for a third film. Back in November 2022, ET confirmed that a third installment of The Princess Diaries was in the works at Disney.
Since the second Princess Diaries premiered, Hathaway and Clarkson have remained friends, with Hathaway appearing on season 3 and season 5 of The Kelly Clarkson Show. But Clarkson has yet to acknowledge any involvement in the third Princess Diaries movie.
The original film was released in 2001 and its sequel three years later. Both of the films were directed by Garry Marshall, who died in 2016. Hathaway played Mia, a normal high school student whose paternal grandmother, Queen Clarisse (Andrews), informs her she's the Princess of Genovia. By the end of the second film, Mia herself was the Queen of Genovia.
Just last month, former Princess Diaries star Mandy Moore shared several throwback photos from the first film, teasing her potential involvement in the third movie by writing in part, "As I look through old photos, which brings back old memories, I realize how much I like the number 3…😅."
In April, Sandra Oh recreated a memorable moment on The Kelly Clarkson Show from the 2001 comedy in which her character, Vice Principal Geraldine Gupta, gets an important call about an imminent royal arrival to Grove High School. In the brief callback moment, Oh channels her inner Vice Principal Gupta, picks up a phone and sternly speaks, "Gupta -- Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm," before hanging up to declare, "The Queen is coming."
Pine shared with ET in March 2023 that he would be more than happy to join the cast of The Princess Diaries 3.
"Yeah, I'm here! I'm here for it," Pine told ET. "Give me, give me a phone call or an email."
Back in October 2022, Hathaway raved to ET about the possibility of making a Princess Diaries 3 and the chance to work with the "magnificent" Andrews once again.
"I would more than entertain it, I'm pulling for it," she shared. "If there's any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen."
