"I'm so glad I did it."
Alison Brie was very pleased with how her nude scenes in GLOW were handled.
The 34-year-old actress is featured in Net-a-porter’s weekly digital magazine, The Edit, and says that she took no issue with stripping down for some of the steamier scenes on the Netflix show.
"Very early on in auditioning it was a case of, ‘Don’t come to any more auditions unless you’re comfortable with nudity, because it is a part of the show.’ It was a deal-breaker, for sure," Brie recalls. "At that time, I just wanted to be on the show so much that I really didn’t care. It was important that the show be a realistic portrayal of life in the way people live and the way they have sex. And also that our show be about every aspect of women’s bodies, and women not being ashamed of their bodies."
She notes, "We’re not being shot in a way that’s over-sexualizing us, or exploiting us. I found it very freeing and empowering, and I’m so glad that I did it.”
Brie did quite a bit of training to take on the role of female wrestler Ruth Wilder and now says she exercises about six days a week, and has a new appreciation for her body.
"It’s not just, ‘Oh, we got in amazing shape for this show, so I feel great.’ It was more about learning to use our bodies in this totally different way. It really changed the way I felt about my body. It felt so empowering and exciting, and it proved that we were capable of so much more than we expected," she says of her body transformation. "GLOW is such a body-positive show; all of the women on it feel really comfortable in their bodies, and that is such a healthy thing to be surrounded by."
Brie's hard work paid off as she was nominated for a Golden Globe on Monday!
In addition to GLOW, Brie also has a role in The Disaster Artist, starring alongside her husband, Dave Franco, and his brother, James Franco, and says the experience meant a lot to her.
"[Dave and I] spent the first few years of our relationship on opposite sides of the world, because I was shooting TV shows that were based here [in LA], and he was shooting movies that were in Berlin, London, places like that. It was kind of great, because on my breaks I could travel the world, but it’s hard to be apart from your partner, so to shoot this with him and James was very special."
In an interview with ET in June, Brie joked that after her GLOW training, her husband knows to stay on her good side. "I put him in a head lock when he does the wrong thing," she quipped.
