In a move sure to delight fans of '90s comedy, Netflix has officially approved a sequel to the beloved film Happy Gilmore.
During its upfront presentation to advertisers on Wednesday afternoon in New York City, the streamer announced the production of the new film. Adam Sandler, who both starred in and co-wrote Universal Pictures' Happy Gilmore, confirmed his involvement in the project.
In the 1996 cult classic, Sandler portrays a hockey player grappling with anger management issues. Unexpectedly, he discovers his talent for golf and decides to join the golf tour circuit to save his grandmother's house.
Along the way, he faces off against the arrogant pro, Shooter McGavin, portrayed by Christopher McDonald, in a series of comedic clashes. Julie Bowen and Carl Weathers also contributed to the film's success as part of the supporting cast.
While Netflix has remained tight-lipped about specific details surrounding the sequel, including its storyline, writer, and director, fans' anticipation is already running high.
For years, talk of a sequel has been rampant, especially after Sandler and McDonald said as much years ago. In February 2021, they appeared together on The Dan Patrick Show and shared that they were all in on the sequel.
Fast-forward more than three years later, Sandler hinted at the project's development during a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, teasing the sequel's announcement on her talk show, hinting that Happy Gilmore 2 was indeed in the works.
Sandler's collaboration with Netflix has been fruitful, marked by a $250 million deal that has produced numerous original titles for the streaming service, from the Western parody The Ridiculous Six to the acclaimed stand-up special 100% Fresh.
