ABC has ordered a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff series centered on Seattle firefighters, the network announced at its Upfront presentation on Tuesday in New York City. The spinoff is likely to launch out of an episode of Grey’s next season.

Set in a Seattle firehouse, the one-hour drama will focus on a group of heroic firefighters. From the captain to the newest recruit, the series will follow these brave men and women as they risk their lives and their hearts, both in the line of duty and off the clock.
“No one can interweave the jeopardy firefighters face in the line of duty with the drama in their personal lives quite like Shonda [Rhimes], and Grey’s signature Seattle setting is the perfect backdrop for this exciting spinoff,” Channing Dungey, President of ABC Entertainment, said in a statement.
Stacy McKee (Grey’s Anatomy) will pen the script for the project and serve as executive producer, while Rhimes and Betsy Beers will also executive produce.

The new spinoff marks Grey’s’ second following Private Practice, which ran on ABC from 2007 to 2013 and followed Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh), after her move from Seattle to Los Angeles to help run a private medical practice.
Grey’s continues to be a ratings success for ABC, even as it enters its 14th season next fall. The show currently averages more than 11 million viewers, when DVR ratings are factored in, for season 13.
