It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s Supergirl!

On Wednesday, CBS released the very first look at one of the fall’s most anticipated superhero TV show - and there’s a lot to digest.

Glee alum Melissa Benoist dons the red cape as Superman’s cousin Kara Zor-El, who was born on the planet Krypton and escaped amid its destruction years ago. Kara, who after arriving on Earth was taught by her foster family, the Danvers, to be careful with her superhuman powers.

But when an unexpected disaster forces her to use her powers in public, the 24-year-old – now working as an assistant to a high-powered, no-nonsense boss (Calista Flockhart) a la The Devil Wears Prada – decides to embrace her extraordinary abilities and follow in the footsteps of her famous cousin, Superman.

The trailer, clocking in at a whopping seven minutes, gives you a pretty good preview of Supergirl’s light-hearted tone and its notable cast of characters.

Even the visual effects are enough to whet your appetite, from the moment Kara first takes flight to save her sister (Chyler Leigh) to a memorable jump off a high-rise rooftop during a conversation with Jimmy Olsen (Mehcad Brooks).

Kara’s secret identity doesn’t stay secret for long on Supergirl, so any worries about prolonging that part of the story won’t be an issue.

And if you’re suddenly thinking to yourself, “Haven’t I seen this before?” You wouldn’t be wrong. Just a few weeks ago Saturday Night Live made a Black Widow spoof, and it’s interesting how similar Supergirl is – straight down to the opening rom-com music.

Uncanny eh?

Supergirl,
from the creative team behind Arrow and The Flash, debuts in November and will air Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
