The Making of the 'New Girl' Show Open

FOX's side-splitting comedy New Girl returns tonight at 9/8c, and the show's star, Zooey Deschanel, helps explain the thought process behind their innovative opening title sequence in a new video.

Zooey, who sings the show's catchy tune, described her inspiration for her nostaligic sounding vocals, saying, "I sort of looked to a lot of the theme songs that I loved from shows that already existed."

In addition to her film and television career, Zooey is also a professional musician as one half of the indie band She & Him. Earlier, Us Weekly reported that Zooey and her husband, Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard, have separated after two years of marriage.
