Stars were shockingly good at keeping the big news hush-hush in 2014.
Hollywood is pretty good at keeping secrets, but who knew some stars were this good? Between the paparazzi and baby bumps, it’s pretty tough to keep a celeb pregnancy completely under wraps, yet some couples managed to do just that in 2014.
Here are the five bundles of joy that we didn’t see coming -- and one that we sort of did but, you know, not for sure.
Congratulations, Completely Exhausted! This year marked the second time Jimmy Fallon shocked fans with big baby news. The Tonight Show host and wife Nancy Juvonen welcomed Frances Cole Fallon on Dec. 3. As with their older daughter, 1-year-old Winnie Rose, Frances was born by surrogate and the pregnancy was kept private until after her birth.

Gaby Hoffman & Chris Dapkins
Gaby Hoffmann’s pregnancy wasn’t a surprise -- she showed off her baby bump at the Obvious Child premiere -- but the announcement of her first child’s birth was. The 32-year-old actress and her boyfriend Chris Dapkins welcomed daughter Rosemary on Nov. 19, but Hoffman’s manager didn’t confirm the news until mid-December.
Ellen Pompeo & Chris Ivery
Someone is clearly the product of a Shonda Rhimes show! Ellen Pompeo and hubby Chris Ivery welcomed daughter Sienna May Ivery over the summer, but the Grey’s Anatomy star waited two whopping months to share the big news with fans. “Sienna was born via surrogate & I would like to thank my whole @ShondalandTV family for helping us enjoy these first few weeks privately,” Pompeo tweeted on Oct. 2. Later that day, the 44-year-old reminded Jimmy Kimmel that she’s pretty good at this whole secret thing: “The mayor of New York City married us [in 2007] and I kept that secret for five days too. So I’ve done it before. The covert thing is kind of fun!” Touché! Sienna is the couple’s second daughter -- Pompeo gave birth to Stella Luna, now 5, in 2009.
Bill Hader & Maggie Carey
Should we have taken the hint when Stefon announced his pregnancy on Saturday Night Live? Former SNL star Bill Hader and his wife, The To Do List director Maggie Carey, welcomed daughter Hayley Hader on Nov. 5. Already parents to big sisters Hannah Kathryn, 5, and Harper, 2, Hader and Carey managed the impressive feat of keeping this third pregnancy quiet.

Danny Masterson & Bijou Phillips
Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis weren’t the only That 70’s Show alum to have a daughter this year. Their former co-star Danny Masterson and his wife Bijou Phillips welcomed their first child, Fianna Francis Masterson, on Valentine’s Day. Masterson made the surprise announcement about their new bundle of joy on Instagram. “Mom and baby are doing amazing,” The Men at Work actor wrote. “You can all refer to me as dj dadpants from now on...” Masterson proposed to Phillips in 2009 after eight years of dating, and the two were married in 2011.
Okay, this one wasn’t a total surprise, but Eva Mendes never officially confirmed her pregnancy. That’s why it was huge news when the 40-year-old actress and boyfriend Ryan Gosling waited four days to announce the Sept. 12 birth of their daughter Esmerelda Amada. Mendes told Ellen DeGeneres that she and Gosling know it will be hard for their baby girl to have privacy, so they kept the pregnancy quiet because it was “the first opportunity to protect” Esmerelda while also allowing Mendes a calm, quiet nine months. As for the baby’s interesting moniker, Esmerelda comes from both the character in Victor Hugo’s book The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Gosling’s well-known love of Disney, while Amada was the name of Mendes’ grandmother.
Congratulations to all the new Hollywood parents!
