The actress shared an emotional essay on Facebook on Saturday, claiming that she was molested by a stuntman.
James Cameron is addressing recent comments made by actress Eliza Dushku, who claims that she was molested by stuntman Joel Kramer while filming the director's 1994 film True Lies. Kramer has since denied the allegations.
“I just heard about it, but obviously Eliza is very brave for speaking up, and I think all the women are that are speaking up and calling for a reckoning now [are brave]," Cameron said on Saturday to a group of journalists during the Television Critics Association press tour for his series James Cameron's Story of Science Fiction.
Earlier in the day, Dushku shared on Facebook claims that she was molested by the stuntman at the age of 12.
Cameron said that he remembered Kramer, yet hasn't worked with him since.
“I know the other party, not well, he hasn’t worked for me since then, but the fact that this was happening under our noses, and we didn’t know about it," he said. "I think going forward it’s important for all industries, and certainly Hollywood, to create a safe avenue for people to speak up, that they feel safe and that anybody that might be a predator or an abuser knows that that mechanism is there, that it’s encouraged and there’s no shame around it and there will be consequences.”
The Avatar director also said that if he had known about the incident, "there would have been no mercy. Now especially that I have daughters, there would really have been no mercy."
Meanwhile, Kramer told Deadline on Saturday, “These are outlandish, manipulated lies. I never sexually molested her. I’m sick to my stomach. It’s not true. I think she’s making this up in her imagination. This is all lies. Lies, lies, lies. I treated her like a daughter. We all looked out for her."
Tom Arnold, who starred alongside Dushku in True Lies, took to Twitter to commend her for speaking out.
Meanwhile, Reese Witherspoon also recently opened up to Oprah Winfrey about her experience with sexual harassment in the industry.
